PIERRE, SD – Glenn J. Brinkman,78, of Pierre died on Thursday, March 6, at Avera St. Mary’s in Pierre with his wife Susan by his side. Services are pending and will be held at a later date.
Glenn Joseph Brinkman was born July 30, 1946, to Henry Brinkman Jr. and Emelia (Janke) Brinkman in Ashley, ND. Glenn was always been proud to share that he was born on his father’s birthday, who was also born on his father’s birthday. He grew up in Ashley and eventually graduated from Ashley High School in 1964.
Glenn spent a short time living in Mansfield and Glenham, SD. He married Susan Mary Kabrud on August 3, 1979 in Aberdeen, SD. They settled in Selby, SD, and raised their three boys: Matthew Glenn, Christopher Edwin and Michael Lynn. Glenn and Susan also raised registered Arabian horses, something he always loved. He had an Arabian stallion (Kheynote) which he took to Scottsdale to a horse show and came home with a bronze medal. He was proud of this horse as it had the same birthday as his oldest son, Matthew. Glenn and his family moved to Pierre in 1989 and he went to work for Iseman Mobile Homes until he opened his own mobile home sales, BAS Homes, up by the mall until 2005. He bought some land and built Brinkman Arabian Stables which is still there today. He acquired a stallion by the name of TR Alada legacy which he showed to Canadian National Champion and also placed 3rd at the US Nationals the same year. Glenn was a very proud owner of his horses and sold them all over the world.
When his health started failing the last few years, he and his wife downsized their herd, yet still wanted a few horses around the farm for their grandchildren. Glenn was beyond proud of his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with them and playing games.
Glenn had many special moments with his grandchildren that he took great pride in. His one and only granddaughter, Sienna, took after her grandfather and his love of horses. This last Christmas, even though Glenn was not feeling well he gifted her with a saddle, bridle and blanket and had the privilege of seeing his granddaughter happy. His oldest grandson Kadam, would sneak over to the barn and visit him and go for rides on the four-wheeler and in “Grandpa’s” pickup. Glenn really enjoyed watching videos of his grandsons Kadam and Kyler playing sports such as football, basketball and baseball. Camden, the youngest grandson would spend time showing Glenn photos of him fishing and his big catches.
Glenn is survived by his wife Susan, sons and grandchildren: Matthew (Sara) and their children Sienna and Camden of Tea, SD, Christopher (Mandee) and their children Kadam and Kyler of Marshall, MN, and Michael of Pierre. He is also survived by his brother Henry (Delford) Brinkman of Pierre, his sister Betty Trapp of Fargo, ND his mother-in-law Mary Jane Kabrud of Aberdeen, brother-in-law Steven Kabrud of Aberdeen, sister-in-law Sandy (Robin) Burgard and their son Cameron of Sioux Falls, SD, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law Kenneth Kabrud and sister Darlene.
