Greg Vogel (63) of Pierre, made his heavenly journey on October 7, 2021. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 14th from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. A funeral service will take place on Friday, October 15th at 10:30am at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre, with interment to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.

Gregory Allen Vogel was born November 12, 1957 to Frederick and Neva (Gillespie) Vogel in Aberdeen, SD. He attended the Catholic schools in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1976. He later attended Mitchell Technical Institute to become an electrician and was most recently employed by Onida Electric with plans of retirement in December.

On May 12, 1979 he was united in marriage to Kila Brunmeier. Together they raised their two beautiful daughters Amanda and Aimee. Greg was a “Dad” to so many. He didn’t know a stranger; he and Kila opened their hearts and home to six exchange students and fifteen Trapper’s baseball players. Anyone entering their home leave as family.

Greg was a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard. In 1994 he was selected as Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year by the 200th Engineer Company for his appearance, dedication to duty, military bearing, Army physical fitness, and knowledge of the unit and its equipment. During his 21 years of service, he received many awards and honors, the highest being The Army Commendation Medal for exceptionally meritorious service as the Equipment Section Sergeant in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired from the National Guard in September of 2004. Greg was also a member of the American Legion Sully Post #79.

Greg was an avid sports enthusiast whether by participating, spectating, or coaching. He spent many years playing softball, primarily on the pitching mound, as well as many hours on the court for city rec basketball. Friendships made with these teammates were important to Greg and have lasted decades. Tossing horseshoes and golfing were also favorite pastimes of his, and he routinely anticipated annual summer golf trips with his brothers. Perhaps most notably, he loved coaching his daughters and their sports teams over the years. He was a second dad to many of these girls. His consistent encouragement instilled in them a competitive spirit, giving each the confidence to push harder and aim higher.

In recent years, Greg’s passions were camping and fishing. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time with family and friends along Missouri River, including a permanent camp site at Dakota Sky.

Grateful for having shared in Greg’s life are his wife Kila, daughters: Amanda (Clint) and Aimee (Cody) all of Pierre, SD. Grandchildren: Alyssa, Aiden, Addison, Austin and Andrew. Brothers: Mike (Diana) MN, Bob (Tammy) IA, and Steve (Ronnie) TX; sisters: Barb SD, Mary (John) NE and Monica (Loren) MT; his mother-in-law Edna Brunmeier and sister-in-law Kaleen Wolfworth both of Onida, several bonus children, especially Christian, Malte, Ana, Antonia, Fabio, Ronja, Jack, Teddy, Tyler, and Nick, several nieces and nephews and many close friends.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Neva Vogel, brother Fran Vogel, and father-in-law Kenneth Brunmeier.
