PIERRE, SD – Gwen Mord,91, of Pierre died on Tuesday, May 20th at Edgewood Living in Pierre. A prayer service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, May 25th at the Community Bible Church in Pierre with visitation for one hour prior. Private family burial will take place at a later date at Scotty Philip Cemetery.
Gwen was born in Avon, SD to Herman and Faye Schultz. She grew up in the Avon and Springfield area and graduated high school from Springfield, SD in 1951. After High School, Gwen went to school for 5 weeks to get her teaching certificate. There was a shortage of teachers in the area so Gwen and her friends “fit the bill” to teach rural school in Bon Homme County. Gwen went on to teach school in rural, parochial, elementary and junior high. Of her 38 years of teaching, 33 of those years were spent in the Stanley County School District.
Gwen was married to Les Mord in Springfield, SD in 1954. The majority of their married life was spent living in a home on the Missouri River in Ft. Pierre. They raised their two children, Jan and Joan, in the small home with a big yard. Gwen enjoyed gardening every summer. Her garden was large with both vegetables and varieties of flowers. She spent much time babying her roses. She also took pride in growing gladiolas. She looked forward to decorating her home for the holidays and hosting card games with friends. Later in life she slowed down enough to enjoy reading many books. Always a fan of historical fiction and biographies.
Gwen was a member of Retired Teachers and attended Senior Citizen events. She volunteered at the Discovery Center for years. Gwen attended the Wesleyan Church for several years where she made close friends. Later, she attended Community Bible Church and relished the ladies Bible study. She held dear the friends she made while learning more about the gospel. Gwen had a quiet faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ.
As guests admired her grandchildren’s pictures displayed in her living room, she would tell them how she prayed for each grandchild every day. Her best memories were with her grandkids, especially at the 4th of July.
Immediate family include: son, Jan (Sharon) Mord; daughter, Joan (Kevin) Hofer. Grandkids, Alex (Micah) Mord, Lewis (Chesney) Hofer, Ben (Vero) Mord, Morris Hofer, Andrew Mord and Jill (Tommy) Stevens. She has three great granddaughters: Zoey and Izzy Hofer, and Mila Mord.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Les Mord; parents Herman and Faye Schultz; brother and sister in-law, Kenneth and Pearl Schultz; in-laws, Rudolph and Signe Mord.
Memorials may be directed to Avera @ Home, Home Health and Hospice Care.
