Halona Marie Hall, 65, of Big Bend, SD, died on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Avera Saint Mary’s Hospital surrounded by her children, her sisters, and loved ones. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 20th from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. A Prayer service will take place that evening at 5:00pm at the Big Bend Community Center followed by an overnight wake. Funeral services will be at 10:00am on Monday, March 21st at the Big Bend Community Center. Halona will be laid to rest at the Hall Family Cemetery near Big Bend. In lieu of flowers memorials can be given to the family.

Halona was born on November 23, 1956, to Frank “Bud” and Dolores “Dee” (Barry) Hall. She was the oldest of Bud and Dee’s six children. She grew up in Big Bend, SD and graduated from TF Riggs High School in 1975. Halona was raised a tough and fearless cowgirl, where horses, hard work, and true grit were an integral part of her life and identity. In 1978, she married Michael Hackett, and from that union, three children were born: Chev, Candace, and Courtney. Halona worked in hospitality and tribal relations before her health took a turn for the worse in 2012, when she was faced with a difficult, life-altering decision: start kidney dialysis.

In 2014, Halona made the decision to get her kidneys removed due to a hereditary genetic disease called Polycystic Kidney Disease that caused them to fail. She bravely went to dialysis three times per week, and found much comfort, care, and friendship from the nursing staff on the Kidney Dialysis Unit at St. Mary’s. Halona’s family would like to thank all the KDU nurses and staff who took wonderful care of her and treated her like she was family. Halona dealt with more health problems than the normal person, but by sheer will and determination, lived the remainder of her life with a smile on her face, positive words on her tongue, and love in her heart for all her family and friends.

Even with a plethora of health problems stacked against her, Halona’s most treasured role was as a grandma, and she rarely let her poor health slow her down. She was the happiest when she was with her grandkids or at their events. She loved watching their sports and extra-curricular activities, and spending time with them any chance she got. On occasion, the grandchildren could even talk her into some trouble. Hunting and fishing with her family was another of Halona’s favorite past times, and she could out-hunt and out-fish most men. Albeit a deadly hunter, Halona was also an avid animal lover and could often be found with cats, dogs, chickens, (too many) horses, and on occasions, a raccoon…or two.

Halona is survived by her children; Chev (Liz) Hackett, Candace Hackett, and Courtney (Alan) Freng, her grandchildren; Sophie, Sydney and Hudson Hackett, Cameron, Tryston and Ashton Ogle, Avery Williams and George Freng, her siblings; Marianna Nelson, Frank Hall, Chris (Melissa) Hall and Angela (Allen) Slaughter and all her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John, and her nephew Jason.
