Helen Bernice Crow was born at the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Old Agency on December 14,1939, to Eunice Slides Off and Bernard Shooter. Bernice joined one brother, Sidney Herman Andrew and one adopted brother, Lloyd Janis.
Helen grew up in Isabel and Thunder Butte. She loved to ride horses, fish, and spend all the time she could with her grandkids. She had one son, Leslie Boyd Shooter, adopted son, Darren Shooter, and one daughter, Eunice Rose (Marcus) Hollow Horn. Helen also had numerous other sons that she loved like her own, Ben Red Horse, Roland Fielder, Chuck Allen Brown, and Tallie Fielder. Helen also raised an adopted granddaughter, Dorice Reynolds, until her health started to fail. Her family was what made her the proudest.
Bernice worked for over 30 years serving our community as an emergency medical technician, community health representative, and optometrist assistant. She did her absolute best to go above and beyond for her community.
Bernice married Lawrence Crow on December 9,1985. They loved to go thrifting and rummaging. If you ever needed anything, those two would have it. They would take their grandsons, Cameron, Joshua, and Jacob all over the place. They enjoyed traveling every weekend. The past several years, she would take off with Syrus Lawrence to rummage on weekends.
Bernice retired in 1998 to stay home and babysit her grandson, Marcus Jr. She wanted to make sure no one ever hurt her grandsons. She raised Sylis, Syrus, Mason, and Solomon Leslie while Eunice worked, and she helped raise Jacob, Jennifer, Josh, and Lanice as much as she could.
Bernice took pride in her family. She did everything possible to make her family’s life easier, if you needed groceries, pampers, clothing, food, or money, she would get it for you. She taught us all not to rely on anyone but ourselves. She taught us to be independent, strong, and to love one another more than anything. She did not teach us to live without her.
Bernice had numerous medical issues, including cancer (5 times), a heart attack, arthritis, and diabetes, but every day, she got up and worked, never complaining. She did not allow us to pity ourselves. Our beautiful Ina and grandma were perfect for us.
Honored to have been blessed to share her life was her daughter, Eunice (Marcus) Hollow Horn; grandsons: Cameron Howe, Marcus Jr., Sylis, Syrus, Mason, and Solomon Leslie, Jacob (Hillary) Shooter, Josh (Brittney) Shooter, and Leon Leslie; granddaughters: Jennifer Shooter, Lanice Rose Shooter, Shatoya Shooter, Dawnelle Garreau, and Keanna Haskell; her pride was her great grandchildren: Latoya, Leah, and Westin Jordan, Jacob Jr., Shooter, Layton Shooter, Madisynn Shooter, Maleiah Shooter, Shi’ann Garreaux, K’Lea Garreaux, Taycen Peniska, Casdyn Peniska, Lebron Shooter, Taydon Shooter and Adelaide Shooter; and three great-great grandchildren: Wilder and Eli Shooter and Aspen Iron Hawk.
