Hilda Emma Landis passed on during the evening of Sunday, June 5, 2022 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital (after living to 95 years old), when her husband and sweetheart Oscar, danced her away to heaven.
Hilda was born west of Isabel, SD, in Ziebach County on October 28, 1926 to Alexander & Anna (Bertch) Zulauf.
Her parents moved to Bison in 1927 to a farm seven miles south of Bison, SD, where Hilda went to a country school. Later they moved to Bison and she attended the Bison school. Her father Alexander died in 1942. At that time, her mother, Anna, moved back to Isabel. Hilda finished school in Isabel.
After school, Hilda moved to Mobridge, SD, to work at the old Railroad Hospital. It was there she met the love of her life, Oscar Landis. Oscar had something in his eye and had to go to the hospital, where he met Hilda. He used to say that he thought he had something in his eye until he went to the hospital and then really had something in his eye once he met Hilda.
In July of 1945, Oscar went into the service. Hilda then went back to Isabel and worked at the Coop Store. When Oscar came back from the Army they were married on April 20, 1947 at the Isabel Lutheran Church.
They made their home on a farm 12 miles West of Mobridge for a short time. They then moved to Mobridge about a year later. They had one daughter, Judy Richey, born on August 6, 1950.
Hilda worked for Kenny Thompson’s Laundromat and later did housework and painting for seven years. She then worked at the Ben Franklin store for Walter Tutland and then for Doug and Lucy Nelson for a total of 12 years.
After she retired, she stayed home and made quilts, crafts, afghans, and liked to draw and sketch. She always had a big garden and flowers every year. She walked every day and enjoyed the outdoors.
In her younger years while still at her and Oscar’s famous mint green stucco house (part of which was an old train car), Hilda made the best homemade ranch dressing on the planet, and often served this with her fresh cut garden salads. Her granddaughters rave about these salads to this day. She loved spending time with her granddaughters, Kelli and Kari Richey, when they would come stay for the summer, and would take them on many walks to get ice cream and to go shopping and rummaging at area rummage sales. She let her granddaughters play with their dolls and barbies on her vintage hutch (without even cringing). Hilda loved when her granddaughters would comb and style her hair and give her a pedicure. Hilda and Oscar would occasionally go camping with their daughter Judy and her late husband Charlie and their granddaughters, and always managed to stay dressed “snappy” as she put it. Hilda was always ready for photos with her hair, makeup, clothing, and jewelry always on point.
Hilda enjoyed going to the Legion, Moose, and Eagles with Oscar when he was commander, and they would help with fish frys and bingo. Faith was a huge part of her everyday life. She did lots of crocheting, quilts, crafting, rummaging, drawing, and painting. Hilda also loved her “programs” and watched older tv shows like Gunsmoke and the Andy Griffith show.
In later years, Hilda loved bingo and scratch tickets, and occasional trips to the casino. She also loved snuggling with her daughter’s puppies throughout the years, and they made her light up and laugh. She enjoyed going to visit her daughter and loved to watch the horses out the patio door.
Hilda’s big laugh and beautiful smile that lit up every room she entered will be forever missed. Her daily prayers for everyone she loved will continue from her in heaven, this we know for sure.
Hilda was preceded in death by her loving husband, Oscar Landis, son-in-law Charlie Richey, her parents, her sisters Elsie, Esther, Francis, Martha, and Tillie, and her brother Carl, in-laws John and Lena Landis, Lenhard and Hilda Landis, Clayton and Alma Skillingstad, Emil and Elenora Pfitzer, Norman and Clara Landis, Alvin Sieler, Wally Walz, and Alvina Harp.
Hilda was survived by her daughter, Judy Richey (Lyle Lutz, both of Mobridge), her granddaughters, Kelli Richey (Tim Flow, both of Bismarck, ND), and Kari Richey (Bismarck, ND), Lyle’s daughter Tina Globoker (John) and granddaughter Hope (Byron Center, MI), her sister, Irene (Hirsch) Stone (Rapid City, SD), and her brother, David (Rapid City, SD), in-laws Irene Walz (Aberdeen, SD), Junior and Phyllis Prasek (Selby, SD), Albert Harp (Rapid City, SD), and also many nieces and nephews.
