Funeral services for Saundra Lee Mitzel, 74, of Mound City will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mound City. Burial will be at the Mound City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM Tuesday at the church. Saundra passed away Friday, October 16, 2020, at the Walworth County Care Center in Selby.
Saundra Lee (Pudwill) Mitzel was born on July 29, 1946 in McIntosh, SD, to Alvin and Marian Pudwill. Saundra (Sandy) was the oldest of four children. Sandy graduated from Java High School in 1964. Later that same year, she was honored to be crowned the Selby area Dairy Princess.
Sandy married James Mitzel on November 21st, 1964 in Java, SD. Following their marriage, they lived in Mound City and later in Herreid where they ran the Ponderosa Tavern for two years. In 1968, they moved back to the farm 1 ½ miles south of Mound City where Sandy lived until she entered the Walworth County Care Center in November of 2019.
Sandy had various jobs in her lifetime and touched many lives. One of her first working adventures was selling Avon to people in the local community. She also worked for the Herreid Liquor Store. Some of her favorite jobs were running Mitzel’s Café and The Place in Mound City. She also cooked at the Selby Good Samaritan Center. Her last place of employment was the Walworth County Jail. Sandy was involved in the church and the community. She was a member of the St.Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School, Bible School, and sang in the choir. She served on the Herreid School Board, the Oahe Special Education Cooperative and served 28 years on the Northeastern Mental Health Board.
Sandy enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, dancing, playing cards, and drinking her coffee. Sandy loved to cook and when family gathered, they especially enjoyed her German dishes and delicious kuchen. While gathering, family and friends loved to hear Sandy’s stories and jokes. She had a great sense of humor and always had a witty comment and a quick comeback.
Sandy is survived by her husband of 55 years, her children Marty Mitzel of Herreid, Susan (Mike) Wiedrich of Roscoe, Amy (Doug) Gorham of Pierre, Wade (Mary) Mitzel of Sundance, Wyoming and Edward Mitzel of Herreid; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and 3 siblings, Ellen Weisbeck of Herreid, Alvin Pudwill Jr. of Colorado and Helen (Lance) Frisby of Sundance, Wyoming.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson.
