Irene Kost, 92, Herreid, SD, died Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center, Eureka. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 20, 2023 at First Reformed Church, Herreid, led by Rev. Cody Swichtenberg. Inurnment follows at Fairview Cemetery, Herreid. Organist will be Angie Swichtenberg and usher will be Clinton Kost. Congregational Hymns will be “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, “Amazing Grace”, and “How Great Thou Art”.
Irene Mittleider, daughter of Mathilda (Aldinger) and Carl Mittleider, was born near Java, SD on August 27, 1930. She was brought up at her parent’s farm south of Java and attended rural school. Following her schooling, she stayed busy on the farm. Irene married Adam Kost at the EUB parsonage in Bowdle on November 8, 1951. They first settled on a farm 10 miles NE of Herreid. In the early 60’s they relocated to Herreid where Irene cooked at a café and did lots of babysitting while Adam worked in elevators at Greenway and Herreid. Later on, Irene cooked at the Wrangler Inn at Mobridge, SD. Adam died November 7, 2000. Irene then cooked at the Sale Barn Café in Herreid. Irene was a member of the Herreid Reformed Church. She was a talented embroiderer as long as her fingers would permit.
She is survived by two daughters—Gloria (Pius) Lacher of Zeeland, ND and Marlene Starkey of Herreid; eight grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
In addition to Adam, Irene was preceded in death by her father, Carl, on September 23, 1958; her mother, Mathilda, on November 16, 1966; five brothers, four sisters, and son-in-law, Al Starkey.
Honorary bearers will be grandchildren—Heather, Dawn, Kimberley, Mike, Travis, and Jack.
Urn bearers will be granddaughters Amy Scherr of Rockford, MN and Faith Freshour of Buffalo, MN.
Services are in care of Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka.
