Memorial services Jack Lemburg, 84, of Selby will be at 10 AM, Thursday, March 11, 2021, at the United Methodist Church in Selby. Inurnment will be at the Selby Memorial Gardens. There will be a memorial visitation starting at 5 PM Wednesday at the church with a prayer service at 7 PM. Jack passed away Sunday, March 7, 2021, in Selby. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
Jack Bryon Lemburg was born on May 1, 1936, in Bowdle, SD, to Albert “Jim” and Bernice (Zabel) Lemburg. Jack was the only child.
He grew up on the family farm 7 miles SW of Selby, SD. His grandparents, Art and Nellie Zabel, raised him from the age of 2 due to his mother’s death and his father being injured in war. He attended Selby Schools.
Jack signed up for the military at the age of 17 in 1953. He was in basic training for 8 weeks. He then went to Fort Bliss, TX, for a few months where he was then called to Fort Bragg to the 82nd Airborne Paratroopers. He never did go to the Korean War, he stayed in Fort Bragg, NC, as a Sgt. where he taught Paratroopers how to parachute out of planes. He taught Marines, Army, Air Force, men and women. He even taught a General how to parachute out of a plane. President Eisenhower came to the base and picked him as one of the top 10 best paratroopers.
During this time, Jack met his future wife, Louise. They used to love to go dancing together. In 1956 they were married, and he was discharged the same year. Jack moved Louise and their daughter, Donna, to the family farm. On February 13, 1968, their son, Troy, was born. On March 5, 1969, they welcomed their second son, Todd.
Throughout the years Jack enjoyed playing baseball, bowling, hunting and fishing. In his later years he also enjoyed going to Aberdeen to the Brown County Speedway, High School basketball games and playing cards with his friends at the Time Out.
He was also active in the 100th American Legion Post for well over 40 years.
Jack is survived by his friend, Ruby Berens, two children, Donna (Gary) McGee of Selby, SD, and Troy (Sandy) Lemburg of Selby, SD; 6 grandchildren, Marty of Burlington, CO, Vicki (Brent) Wehmeyer of Peculiar, MO, Dusty (Dacey) Hepper of Ft. Pierre, SD, Amanda (Brady) Dunbar of Selby, SD, Zack Lemburg of Aberdeen, SD, and Jeff Lemburg of Selby, SD, and 10 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, wife, Louise, on October 14, 2015, and son, Todd, on July 9, 2018.
