PIERRE, SD – James Arthur Wood, known affectionately as Jim, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, at the age of 87, in Pierre, SD. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, April 2 at the Madison Avenue Church of Christ in Pierre with a visitation one hour prior to the service. For those unable to attend the service it will be live streamed on his obituary page on Isburg Funeral Chapel’s website.

Jim was born on August 15, 1937, in Vale, SD, to Arthur Calvin and Doris (Lickingteller) Wood. Jim was a man whose kindness, humor, and friendly nature touched the lives of all who knew him.

James grew up under the big skies of South Dakota. He graduated from Vale High School. After completing his education, James began his 30-year career as a communications specialist. James was married to Rose Marie in 1976. They lived various places, including Detroit, TX. However, the great outdoors of South Dakota eventually called them home and they settled outside of Pierre. He was an avid fisherman, bowler, and hunter. He often shared these experiences with friends and family. His commitment to community was also evident through his longstanding membership in the Moose Club, where he enjoyed fellowship and service.

James’s legacy is carried on by his beloved family, who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his children, Karen (Harold) Hatcher of Wessington Springs, SD, David (Diane) Wood of San Antonio, TX, Ellen Miranda of Wessington Springs, SD, Geare (Barb) Wood of Ft. Pierre, SD, Daniel (Carol) Wood of Pringle, SD, John Wood of Rapid City, SD, Bill (Anna) Wood of Blunt, SD, Bob (Peggy) Wood of Rapid City, SD, and sister Elnor Wood of Rapid City, SD. James was a proud grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather to several grandchildren, each of whom brought him great joy and pride.

His wife Rose Marie, son James Wood Jr, sister Julie, along with his parents, preceded him in death.
