Joann Hogan Luta Win, age 87, of Ft. Yates, ND, entered the Spirit World on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at the Sunset Nursing Facility at Mandan, ND.
Procession will be at 4:00 PM, CT on Friday, July 5, 2024 from Rooks Funeral Home in Mobridge, SD to the A.J. Agard Building in Fort Yates, ND, where Rosary/Wake Service will be at 7:00 PM, CT.
Funeral will be at 11:00 AM, CT on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the A.J. Agard Building, Brother George Maufort will be officiating. Burial Traditional Services by Allen Flying Bye at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Fort Yates, ND.
Joann “Hogan Luta Win, Redfish Woman” Redfish 87, born January 8th, 1937, in Fort Yates, ND to James Kidder & Alma Red Fish. She attended St. Bernard Mission School until the 6th grade, then transferred to Bismarck High School. At the age of 22 in 1959, she married Marvin Starr, to whom they had 5 kids; 4 boys, George “Jimmy” & Sharon Starr, Ronald “Ronnie” Starr, Loren “Snuff” Starr, Dale “Bisco” Starr & 1 girl, Marvine (Larry) Fast Horse, Fort Yates ND. Joann spent some time living in Twinn Buttes, ND before moving back home in 1964 to live with her Grandma Bertha in Cannonball ND. She spent some time working in a green house in Bismarck, then later worked as a cook for the I.H.S kitchen in Fort Yates. Joann lived most of her life as a stay-at-home mother to her children and grandchildren, as she also cared for her grandsons AJ & Dorian.
Joann enjoyed attending Powwows during the summertime as well as showing support for her brother Felix Kidder, Red Bird’s Sundance, and her son-in-law, Curtis McKay, Maza Yamni Sundance. This is where she received her Indian name, Hogan Luta Win, “Red Fish Woman.” The other Sundances she supported & attended were the Wakpala Hu, Brave Thunder
and Sitting Bull dances. Throughout the years Joann met & created relations with a lot of people, who then began to refer to her as “grandma” or “auntie.”
Joann’s greatest blessings in her life were her grandchildren & great grandchildren, Larson (Amber) & children Lily, Laya, Lainey Fast Horse of Porcupine ND; Kasey Starr of Bismarck ND; Danielle (Chance) Eagle & children Rose, Dylanger Kuntz of Fort Yates ND; Dorian “Booboo” (Shayla Gayton) & children Ally Jo, Akeem Red Fish of New Town ND; Tatum Spotted Horse of Kenel SD, & all her extended grandchildren & great grandchildren.
Joann is survived by her sisters Irene Poor Thunder, McLaughlin SD; Janice Chapman, Poplar, MT; Pauline Red Eagle (Boxer), Poplar, MT; Joyce Growing Thunder, California, Brothers Kenny Many Horses Sr., Fort Yates, ND; Robert “Bobby” Bullhead, Fort Yates, ND.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, James Kidder & Alma Red Fish, sisters Darla Bullhead and Ella Kidder; Amelia Yellow Eyes, brothers Donald Kidder and Felix Kidder; children Marvine Fast Horse and Loren “Snuff” Starr; Grandsons A.J Starr and Brandon Fast Horse; Great Grandson’s Brightyn Foote, Kingston Kuntz.
