FAULKTON, SD – John Eschenbaum 75, of Sisaket Thailand, formerly of Faulkton, SD, passed away unexpectedly Monday July 17, 2023, at Sisaket Provincial Hospital in Thailand.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 14, 2023, at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Faulkton, SD, with Fr. John Short presiding.
John was born on August 1, 1947, to Melvin and Mary (Bauhs) Eschenbaum. John grew up in Faulkton, SD and attended Faulkton School, graduating in 1965.
He attended Presentation School of Nursing graduating in May of 1968 with a RN degree.
John joined the United States Navy in August 1968 serving at a hospital in Pensacola, Florida. He was one of many nurses who received our injured from Vietnam.
In 1970 he was released from active duty and became a member of the United States Naval Reserves, retiring November 1, 1996, with the rank of Commander.
In 1971 he attended Minneapolis School of Anesthesia, graduating in May of 1973. His career began at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. Wanting more freedom, he started doing Locum Anesthesia for hospitals all over the US. He eventually retired in Thailand.
Needless to say, John was a world traveler going to Spain, Philippines, Japan, and Thailand to name a few. Much of his travel began while he served in the Navy, and he continued traveling after his retirement.
John loved his family and their ancestry; he spent many hours researching and learning all he could. He was always up for meeting and visiting with long lost relatives.
He is survived by his two sisters, Jane (Lee) Heying of Winner, SD and Judy Bush of Tulsa, OK; nephews: James (Yukari) Bush of Winchester, CA, Tom (Becky) Burdick and Kent (Pam) Burdick both of Mitchell, SD; nieces: Janelle (Jermie) Schroeder of Mitchell, SD, Angi and Nicole Bush of Tulsa, OK, and Cassandra Garis of Owasso, OK; 11 great nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jeffrey; maternal and paternal grandparents; brother-in-law, James Bush; and niece, Tasha Cosby.
