PIERRE, SD – With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John F. Manning, 76, of Pierre, South Dakota, who left this world on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 10:00 AM. Following the service, the family invites guests to a luncheon at The American Legion from 12:00 to 1:30 PM, with burial with military honors to follow at Scotty Phillips Cemetery in Ft. Pierre. The family requests casual attire.
A Life Well Lived
John Francis Manning was born on June 9, 1948, in Miller, South Dakota, to John T. and Inez (Losey) Manning. He grew up with a strong work ethic and love for his family and community. On June 5, 1971, he married Donna Mae Hulbert at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre, beginning a journey together.
John honorably served his country in the United States Navy for four years during the Vietnam War, receiving his honorable discharge on April 15, 1969. His dedication to service and hard work continued upon returning home, where he worked as an Electrical Lineman for the City of Pierre before venturing into business, successfully running his own arcade and vending business in the Pierre/Ft. Pierre area.
John had a deep love for horses and racing. Whether on the track or in the barn, his passion for the sport was undeniable. Beyond his love for horses, he was known for his kind heart, generosity, and ability to turn strangers into friends. John found joy in helping others, always lending a hand wherever he could. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, whom he was extremely proud of.
John was also a lifetime member of Moose Lodge 1813, where he formed lasting friendships.

John is survived by his wife, Donna; his daughters, Melissa Manning (and special friend Tom Weihoff) of Pierre and Amy (Neal) Hinker of Aberdeen; his grandchildren, Hayden Heckenlaible of Sturgis, Jasmyn and Raniesa Mattke of Aberdeen; his sister Jean (Robert) Ricketts of Ft. Pierre; his brother Michael (Mike) Manning of Yankton; sisters-in-law Gail Manning, Jane Manning, Bonnie Westover, and Sharon Burgstahler; brother-in-law Jim (Carol) Hulbert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John T. and Inez Manning; his four brothers, Don, Robert (Bob), Joseph (Joe), and William (Bill) Manning; his father and mother-in-law, Edwin & Leonora Hulbert; his sisters-in-law, Diane Manning and Alta Manning; his brother-in-law, George Hulbert; and his two nephews, Mark Manning and Tommy Manning.
John’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his loved ones leave behind a legacy that will be treasured forever.
