John Fred Wohlwend, age 81, of Pierre, SD, died January 1, 2021 at his home in Pierre. John was born in Lidgerwood, ND, on the Otterburn farm on December 7, 1939 to Loren and Erna (Haase) Wohlwend. John started school in Lidgerwood. The family later moved to the Haase Homestead. In 1949, the family moved to a farm near South Shore, SD. John was the fourth of fifteen children. In 1955 Loren Senior purchased a farm five miles west of Harrold, SD. John graduated from Harrold High School in 1957. He enlisted in the Navy in 1958. During his tour of duty, he served in San Diego, California and was later stationed in Hawaii on temporary operational training readiness. He later served in Bremerton, Washington working on old ships. During that time he fell and broke his wrist. John was discharged in 1962. After leaving the Navy, John helped on the farm. He later moved to Climax, CO, working as an electrician in the mines. He suffered another broken wrist. He moved back to help on the farm. John lived in Washington for a time before moving back to the farm to help his parents with the farm work. His parents passed away in 1987 and 1988 and he purchased the farm. After fire destroyed the farm house in 2014, John moved to Pierre.
John is survived by five brothers Allen (Sharon) Wohlwend, Effingham, IL, David (Linda) Wohlwend, West Richland, WA, Martin Wohlwend, Sweden, Elam (Sue) Wohlwend, Lincoln, NE, and Mark (Vera) Wohlwend, Joplin, MO, and seven sisters Gretchen Poole, Berwick, ME, Virginia Johnson, Benton, AR, Naomi Shorey, Aberdeen SD, Ramona (Gary) Pfeifer, Hemet, CA, Rachel Bobby and David Mann, Pierre, Rebecca (Tom) Watson, Aberdeen SD, and Grace (Aaron) Stadel, Redfield SD. John is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Loren Sr. and Erna Wohlwend; one sister, Coral Stanton; one brother, Loren Wohlwend Jr., and several nieces and nephews.
John’s family will plan a memorial service and inurnment at a later date.
