PIERRE, SD – Joyce Irene Nielsen, 95, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at Sanford Health’s Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral service will be 11:00am on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre, SD. Visitation will be for one-hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Pierre, SD
Joyce Irene Robertson was born September 23, 1929 in Granville Township, city of Okaton, SD to Alvin and Mable “Tutti” (Ferris) Robertson, the oldest of 6 children.
In her early years, Joyce attended school in Caputa and Draper, SD, until her marriage to William John Nielsen, October 1st, 1946 at St. Paul’s Lutheran. Church in Draper.
Joyce worked in partnership with her husband of 65 years, William John Nielsen, on the ranch near Draper. To this union were born 6 children. Joyce, always busy. She was involved in many diverse community activities and hobbies, to name a few: Member of the Women’s Guild, Member and President of the North Kolls School Board and also volunteer reading support person for elementary schools in the Pierre area. Joyce was also an avid gardener, winning awards for her lavish flower gardens. She shared her love of travel to far destinations and cultures with her spouse and children. Joyce also loved to read and share her Christian Faith and other passions with her spouse, family and friends. As the years passed, Joyce especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren in South Dakota, New Jersey, Ohio, North Carolina, and across the many states where her children have settled.
She is survived by her two sons: Larry and Ross; four daughters: Cindy, Marci, Tricia and Wendy; three sisters: Gwen, Lou Ann and Penny; grandchildren: Evan and Erin Nielsen and innumerable other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
