Joyce Schaefer, 85, Hoven, SD, died Monday, June 24, 2024 at the Bowdle Hospital with her daughters at her side.
Joyce Mavis Lutz, daughter of Anna (Reuer) and Henry Lutz, was born August 28, 1938 east of Lowry, SD. She was brought up near Lowry and later near Akaska, SD. She attended country school and Glenham High School, Glenham, SD, Class of 1956. She was employed as a teller at a bank in Mobridge, SD after graduation. Joyce married Alfred Schaefer at St. Anthony’s Church in Hoven on May 18, 1959. The Schaefers settled in Hoven where Joyce lived the rest of her life. Joyce was a dedicated mom, raising six daughters. Joyce was employed at Schwans Rexall Drug in Hoven. Later, she worked at the Plains Commerce Bank Credit Card division. Joyce retired in 2004. Joyce was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hoven and was a St. Anthony’s Altar Society officer. She loved attending sporting events, especially ones that her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participated in, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Joyce was known to brew up tasty bottles of “apple pie” and bringing them to many of the social events she attended. In a similar manner, Joyce and her apple pie seemed to set the tone for the rest of the evening, and everyone loved both! She was often the Life of the Party. The Hoven community could always count on Joyce to decorate her yard for the Christmas and Halloween seasons. She loved her family, especially her six daughters whom she was so proud of. Her dog Misty was her best friend and companion. Misty’s health was failing as well, and she crossed the Rainbow Bridge two days after Joyce. They are now together once again.
Joyce is survived by her daughters—JoLynn (Dennis) Hawkinson and Shari (Jerry) Kaup of Hoven, Wanda (Willie Jangula) Schaefer of Ashley, ND, LeAnn (Lorin) Wolf and Jackie (Don) Hawkinson of Bismarck, ND, and Karla May of Aberdeen, SD; one brother, Larry (Deb) Lutz of Akaska; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren with a 21st due in December.
