Kathy Crowe was born June 2, 1961 in Yankton, SD to Alberta Jones (Crowe) and Louis Henry Crowe. She went to school at Flandreau Indian School where she graduated in 1979. She married Robert Gene Hawk and had 3 children. A daughter, Sara Gerald Hawk (Greger) on October 13, 1980 of Yankton, a son Ira Wayne Hawk {11-14-84 to 10-15-2000}, and a daughter, Kyra Hawk on 4-10-1992 of Yankton. Not long after she and Gene separated, she met Pete White Buffalo Chief. She lived a long life with him. They first lived in Yankton, and then moved to Vermillion, SD where she went to school at the University of South Dakota. She wanted to be a counselor so she could help with the young people. She was doing her internship at Crow Creek High School in October of 2000 when she lost her son, Ira, in Ft. Thompson, SD. She then moved to Sioux Falls, SD. She was a very hard working, independent woman who was outgoing and loved visiting with her friends and family. She enjoyed going to thrift stores and rummage sales. She loved all 7 of her grandchildren. 5 of them from her oldest, Sara – Ocean Gerald (Cricket), Ira, Kyler (Wah), Alberta (Berta), and 2 of them from her youngest, Kyra – Kimimila (Kimi), and Keyan (deceased in December 2014).
She was a sister of nine – Virgil (Delores) Crowe of Ft. Thompson, James Crowe of Yankton, Louis Crowe of Yankton, Waunita Crowe (Denny), Paul Denny of Yankton, Alan Crowe, Everette Crowe, Beckey Taylor, Candace Crowe (deceased). She would spend as much time as she could with grandchildren and get them whatever they wanted. She was so caring and generous and she would take care of any of her grandchildren and wanted nothing but the best for them.
Her oldest grandchild, Ocean would like to share some of his memories:
He remembers when they were younger, Grandma used to sing, “Who Stole The Cookie Jar,” and she would call out our names. Grandma would say, “No Caffeine!”, so they would only have Sprite at night. Grandma would take us to Falls Park and let us run around and tire us out. Me, auntie, Kyra, Grandma, and Papa Pete took a picture at Mall of America at the aquarium.
Me, Kyler, Gerald, and Ira were at a wrestling tournament. Grandma said, “Be careful, you’re gonna break something,” and Chic would say it was a safe sport, and right after Chic said that someone would get hurt.
She passed away Thursday, July 20, 2023. Proceeded in death by mother, Alberta, father, Louis, brothers: Alan and Everette, sisters: Candace, Rebecca (Becky), her son: Ira, and her grandson: Keyan.
Kathy lived a loving, outgoing life filled with compassion, generosity, and much love.
