Funeral services for Kenneth Ackerman, 75, of Dallas, TX, and formerly of Mound City will be at 1:30 PM, Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the Selby UCC Church. Burial will be at the Mound City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Kenneth passed away Friday, October 14, 2022, in Dallas.
Kenneth D. Ackerman was born on December 7, 1946, at Mobridge, SD to John J. and Hulda (Holzwarth)Ackerman. He was baptized in infancy at Sutley Congregational Church, confirmed at Selby UCC Church. Ken was a current member of the White Rock Community Church in Garland, TX.
Ken grew up with his two older brothers on a farm/ranch 10 miles southeast of Mound City. He attended Maeir Country School for 6 years. He attended Herreid High School and Pollock High School which he graduated from in 1964. Ken attended Aberdeen School of Commerce from 1966-1967. In June of 1967, he became employed as a bookkeeper for the Campbell County Highway Department and eventually was Highway Superintendent. In the fall of 1978, he accepted employment as a bookkeeper for Cenex Oil in Warner, SD where he was employed for 7 years. Ken then worked at Hub City Inc. in Aberdeen, SD as a material handler and machinist. In October of 1997, Ken moved to Dallas, TX. He was employed by in retail management before his retirement in 2020.
Ken moved to Texas because of his love of rodeos and bull riding events. He attended rodeos every Friday and Saturday nights at Mesquite, TX during the season. He also attended Professional Bull riding events at the Finals in Las Vegas every year.
Ken would come home to see family and friends once a year and was last home in April 2021. He always enjoyed the German food made for him while he was home visiting. Even before his last visit home, his health began to decline. He had been very ill the last couple months of his life. He enjoyed weekly telephone calls with his sister-in-law Eva to keep up with the news from home.
Ken is survived by his two brothers, Melvin (Eva) Ackerman of Mound City and Delbert (Phyllis) Ackerman of Selby. Two nephews, Rod Ackerman of Mound City and Kyle (Cindy) Ackerman of Selby. Two nieces, Nadine (Dale) Hoyt of Dickinson, ND and Valerie (Eldy) Leapaldt of Bismarck, ND. He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews.
Ken was preceded in death by his niece-in-law, Sandi Ackerman, his parents John J. and Hulda Ackerman, and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
