Kent Gustafson, 71, Selby, SD, died Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at the Sanford Medical Center, Bismarck, ND.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, June 16, 2023 at St. John Lutheran Church, Selby, led by Pastor Dale Hamre. Peggy Gereau will be organist and usher will be Chuck Hanson. Congregational Hymns will be “Here I Am, Lord”, “How Great Thou Art,” and “Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound.”
Interment follows at the Mound City Cemetery.
Kenton Herbert Gustafson, son of Verna (Moak) and Raymond Gustafson, was born at Mobridge, SD on November 19, 1951. He was brought up on the Gustafson farm nine miles north of Selby. He attended Selby Public School, graduating with the SHS Class of 1970. Kent married Judy Kosters at St. Anthony’s Catholic church in Selby on November 22, 1971. They first lived in Nebraska where Kent worked as a truck driver hauling oil and as a mechanic. They then relocated to Wheaton, MN where he was employed at Jacobson Transport. After recuperating from a workplace injury, Kent returned to Selby in 1987. He farmed the homestead and was a mechanic at Harvest States Elevator in Selby. In 1999, he left Harvest States and farmed fulltime the rest of his life in partnership with his brother, Lon. Kent was brought up in the Bethany Lutheran Church near Selby. He collected model tractors; however, farming was primary interest. Kent will be remembered as one who put others before himself.
Kent is survived by one son, Brian (Amy) Gustafson of St. Cloud, MN; two daughters-Peggy (Neil) Eiynck and Angela (Mike) Gienger of Albany, MN; three brothers—Lon (Cindy) Gustafson of Mobridge, and Roger (Ann) Gustafson and Arlyn (Pam) Gustafson of Gillette, WY; 17 Grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ray, on August 30, 1999; his mother, Verna, on October 10, 2005; one sister, DeEtta Gustafson, on October 12, 2018; and one grandson, Nicholas Gustafson, on December 1, 2006.
Honorary bearers will be granddaughters—Tabitha Eiynck of Zimmerman, MN; Tori Eiynck, Carly Eiynck, Lydia Eiynck, Audrey Eiynck, Tristyn Gienger, and Kendall Gienger all of Albany; Sydney Gienger of Aberdeen, SD; and Amber Gustafson of St. Cloud.
Casketbearers will be Grandsons–Bryce Eiynck of St. Joseph, MN; Alex Eiynck, Simon Eiynck, Landen Eiynck, Oliver Eiynck, and Avery Gienger all of Albany; Jordan Haukos of St. Cloud; and Cole Eiynck of St. Martin, MN.
