Born on December 15, 1940, to Ted and Gladys (Henriksen) Lantz, Larry’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and devotion to God.
Raised on the family farm nestled between Presho and Vivian, Larry’s early years were filled with the simple joys of rural life. He attended a country grade school and later graduated from Presho High School in 1959. His love for farming was evident from a young age, as he worked alongside his father until 1986, when he transitioned to a custodial role at Jefferson School in Pierre. Larry retired from the school district in March of 2003, but his industrious spirit led him to Zander Auto Parts, where he worked as a parts delivery man until his final days.
Larry’s personal life was as rich and fulfilling as his professional endeavors. He first married Karen Erickson, and from this union, his sons Lawrence and Leonard were born. On September 20, 1980, Larry’s heart found its match in Denise (Thompson) Smith, and together they blended a family that included his two sons and her two sons. Larry’s family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with his beloved wife of 43 years, Denise, his children, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Denise Lantz; his son, Lawrence (Rebecca) Lantz and their children, Naomi (Joshua), Hannah, Daniel, Lydia, Martha and Luke; son Dr. Leonard (Dr. Krista David) Lantz and their daughter, Lucy; stepson, David (Paula) Smith and their children, Jared and Jessica (David) and their children, Whittaker and Maren; stepson Derryl (Kelly) Smith and their children, Gunner and Amanda (Justin) and their children, Luke and Nolan; and his sister, Nola Rae (Michael). Larry’s legacy also lives on through numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Gladys Lantz.
Larry’s greatest moment in life was not one of personal achievement or accolade, but the day he received salvation through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on January 1, 1975. His faith was the guiding force in his life, shaping him into a thoughtful, loving, and faith-filled man. Larry’s commitment to spreading the word of God was unwavering, as he served as a Gideon, distributing Bibles to school children and adults alike. He was an active member of Capitol Heights Baptist Church, where he participated in Sunday School, worship services, and supported missions around the world.
An avid outdoorsman, Larry found solace in hunting big game and birds, reveling in the beauty of God’s creation. His downtime was often spent with a Louis L’Amour book in one hand and his Bible in the other, reflecting his love for both adventure and spiritual growth.
Larry Kent Lantz’s life was a journey of love, service, and faith. He touched the lives of many with his gentle spirit and unwavering commitment to his beliefs. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of kindness, generosity, and a life well-lived.
