PIERRE, SD –
Larry Delmer Styles, 66, of Pierre, SD, died unexpectedly on Friday January 26th, 2024, at his home in Pierre, SD. A joint memorial service also remembering his wife Jenette will be held at 10:30am on Saturday February 3rd, 2024, at the Draper Auditorium in Draper, SD. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
Larry was born on March 8, 1957, in Pierre, SD, to Delmer and Rosa Lee (Esmay) Styles. He grew up on the farm north of Draper. He graduated from Draper High School in 1975. After high school he worked for a time at a coal mine in Gillette, WY, before joining his father and uncle working on the family farm. For many years, Larry lived the farmer/rancher life alongside his father, uncle, and brothers raising sheep and cattle and growing mainly wheat and milo. During this time, he bought the Koth place south of Draper and later moved the cattle operation to the Henle place also south of Draper.
On November 28th, 1979, he was united in marriage to Patti Vik. To this union one son was born, Austin Roger. They later divorced. Austin was his pride and joy. Before Austin’s death in 1999, the two of them especially enjoyed fishing together, watching movies and NASCAR, and making their famous chili and fry bread.
On May 1st, 1998, Larry married Jenette (Kermu) Jorgensen. They made their home in Draper until 2000 when they moved to Rapid City and later to Hill City. Larry worked at STAR Academy near Custer until it was closed in 2016. He then worked for Rushmore Forest Products in Hill City. He retired in 2021 to care for his wife. In January 2022, they moved to Pierre, SD, where he resided until his death.
In his younger days, Larry was known as Sal due to his long curly hair. He loved fishing, camping, and hunting. A highlight of every year was the annual pheasant hunting trip to Draper. The Draper Pheasant Club included many friends and relatives.
After moving to the Black Hills, Larry enjoyed riding his Harley on the winding highways, fishing Sheridan Lake, riding his four-wheeler on the trails, and going on picnics with Jenette. Another pastime was panning for gold in the streams of the hills. He was amused by feeding squirrels and birds. He even had a few chickens at their place as pets. Larry and Jenette liked to travel and made several trips to the West Coast to visit her family. Larry had a carefree spirit and an often lighthearted and goofy personality that brought joy to his friends and family.
Larry is survived by his mother, Rosa Lee Styles of Draper, SD; two brothers, David Styles and Robert Styles both of Draper, SD; one sister, Shelli (James) Terwilliger of Rapid City, SD; three stepsons: BJ, Mike, and Matt Jorgensen all of Pierre, SD; two step-granddaughters: Clara and Lucille Ronfeldt; three nieces: Brenda Murray of La Crosse, WI, Tara Meyer of Mounds View, MN, and Teddi Dowling of Draper, SD; and one nephew, Skyler Dowling of Pierre, SD. He is also survived by his “long lost adopted son” TJ Gunderson and his family of Pierre, SD.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son Austin, his wife Jenette, his father Delmer, and his sister Margie Boyle.
