Born on July 6, 1934, to Adam and Eva Berndt, Lauren was the youngest of seven children—three brothers and three sisters. Raised in the rural heart of South Dakota, he grew up with the values of hard work, family, and faith that would define his entire life.
On January 22, 1954, Lauren married the love of his life, Violet Schaffer, in a ceremony at the Herreid Baptist Church parsonage. He worshipped faithfully throughout his life and served in various positions within the Baptist church. Together, they built a life rooted in love, partnership, and shared purpose. They worked side by side on the family farm that involved a cattle, grain and dairy operation that Lauren and Violet purchased from his mother, tending the land and livestock with care and dedication. Lauren truly loved farm life—the rhythms of the seasons, the satisfaction of a hard day’s work, and the simple joys of rural living. His quiet strength and steady hands guided the farm for decades, embodying the timeless ethic of perseverance and humility.
Violet preceded him in death, leaving a profound void in his heart, yet Lauren carried forward with the same gentle resolve that characterized him. He found comfort in his faith, his family, and the memories they had created together.
Lauren is survived by his four beloved children and their families:
– Ken and Tammie Berndt, along with their two daughters and three sons
– Lyle and Tammy Berndt, along with their three daughters
– Carol and Patrick Campbell, along with their three daughters and one son
– Cheryl and Steve Biel
He was a devoted grandfather whose quiet presence and steadfast love left an indelible mark on each grandchild. Lauren’s legacy lives on through the generations he nurtured, the farm he cherished, and the faith he lived every day.
A man of few words but abundant action, Lauren Berndt exemplified integrity, kindness, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, yet his example of a life well-lived—rooted in family, faith, and hard work—will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
He is also survived by sisters-in-law Verda Schaffer and Sharlene McCulloch.
Lauren was proceeded in death by his wife Violet of 64 years and brothers Clinton (Verna) Berndt, Harold (Emma) Berndt, Leland (Della) Berndt and sisters Eunice (John) Leno, Iva (Dan) Orth, Sena (Godfred) Bauer. brothers-in-law, Herbert Schaffer, Gus Schaffer, Wally (Linda) Schaffer, and sisters-in-laws, Helen (Infancy), Margaret (Don) Dean.
