LeRoy Splitt, 89, Eureka, SD, died Monday, April 29, 2024 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD.
LeRoy William Splitt, son of Alice (Thovson) and William Splitt, was born at Veblen, SD on August 14, 1934. He attended a country school near Veblen and then relocated to Britton, SD where he worked in construction with is dad. LeRoy served his country in the United States Army, being inducted January 15, 1957. Following his honorable discharge on January 5, 1959 he continued to work in the construction field. While on a job in Eureka, LeRoy met Luella Teske. They were married May 31, 1959 at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. The couple settled in Eureka where LeRoy began his career as an auto mechanic. Over the years he was employed at Krebs Chevrolet Garage, Metzger Motors, Inc., Raile’s Implement, and K & A Implement. LeRoy retired in 2001 and continued living in Eureka the rest of his life. He was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church where he did lots of ushering. He also belonged to the Eureka Sportsman’s Club, the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186, Eureka, SD, and the VFW Post 5126, Eureka, SD. LeRoy’s favorite hobby was fishing.
LeRoy is survived by one son, Greg (Gail) Splitt of Shakopee, MN; one daughter, Annette (Darryl) Tuttle of Ramsey, MN; one brother, Wayne (Jill) Splitt of Pierre, SD; sister-in-law, Serena (Ralph) Jangula of Bismarck, ND; brother-in-law, Wilbert Forkel of Roscoe, SD; and three grandsons—Joseph (Yichun) Tuttle, Benjamin Tuttle, and Samuel (Sheila) Tuttle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Luella, on October 1, 2002; his father, William, on May 31, 2002; his mother, Alice, on January 20, 1994; one son, Troy; one brother, Ted; one sister, Arlene Robinson; and brother-in-law, Henry Tank.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at the Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, led by Pastor Ryan Gage. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery with military rites by the Eureka Legion Post. Organist will be Kim Gruebele and the congregation will sing “What A Friend we have in Jesus”, “Just as I am, Without one Plea”, and “How Great Thou Art”. Ushers will be Connie Woehlhaff and Kevin Hoff.
Casketbearers will be LeRoy’s grandsons—Joseph, Benjamin, and Samuel; as well as Mike Jangula of Bismarck, ND and Patrick Forkel of Roscoe.
Visitation will be at Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka, from 5:00-7:00 PM Tuesday with family present from 5:00-6:00 PM.
