Lorraine was born March 10, 1924, on a family farm in Geddes, SD to Joe and Elsie (Fiala) Pavlis. She and her two brothers attended country school either walking or riding on horseback for two miles. Many times, more than one to a horse. At age 17, after graduating from Geddes High School, she was on her own. Lorraine moved to Sioux Falls where she went to work at Harolds Studio. She loved to dance and that is where she met her future husband, Kenneth, who was home on furlough from the merchant marines. When the Second World War concluded, they were married. In 1946, the Augspurger family purchased the St. Lawrence high school dormitory and converted it into a hunting lodge. This is likely one of the earliest pheasant lodges in our state. The Augspurger boys and their father later developed hardware stores in several towns and owned an automobile and a machinery dealership in Miller. She helped deliver cars, parts, and machinery supplies, but spent most of her time as a happily married helper at home. Lorraine and Kenneth were always together.
Later in their marriage, they spent the winter months in Arizona and traveled extensively. Israel was her favorite country. There, she reaffirmed her baptism in the Jordan River and took communion at the Garden of Gethsemane. Boy did she love to dance and play cards. Lorraine was a loving and faithful wife and a volunteer extraordinaire for school and church activities. Anyone who was married in the St. Lawrence church or had a funeral there could count on her helping out. She was quick to point out that the Lord was good to her, turned to Him, and thanked Him for all matters in her life.
Survivors are her son, Dr. Ken (Marianne) Augspurger, Sioux Falls; grandsons, Jamie, Sioux Falls, and Jeffrey of Jordan, Montana; and numerous nieces, nephews, and tons of friends of all ages.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth (2004); her parents; two brothers: Lawrence and Bill; her husband’s siblings: Ione, Wendell, Robert, Delores, and Marvin; and a good friend, Wilbur Hurd.
