Mrs. Raymond Kurle, age 103 years, 1 month, and 14 days passed away of old age on September 7, 2021 at the Bowdle Heath Care Center in Bowdle.
Lorraine Olga Katherine Bader was born July 24, 1918 at home in Java, SD. Her parents were Christian and Wilhelmina (Mauch) Bader. Her family moved to Bowdle when she was in the 2nd grade. While in high school she worked at Gross Brother’s and following high school graduation in 1936 she worked at Braufman’s General Merchandise store in Bowdle and enjoyed that very much.
Lorraine was united in marriage to Raymond H. Kurle (son of Jakob K. and Rosina (Gross) Kurle) on October 26, 1941 in Bowdle. They raised 3 sons; Jacob, Donald and Charles. Lorraine was a home-maker and thrived on entertaining and serving meals with her china and silver sets. Many of her meals were ethnic Germans from Russia. She made kneflas, cheese buttons, kraut knepf, and hot German potato salad. On Sundays she cooked homemade soups like borscht, ham and bean, chicken noodle and her and Ray’s favorite egg drop. Cake or apple pie was for dessert. She made cinnamon and caramel rolls and buns weekly. She also baked German kuchen. Every summer Lorraine canned fruits, corn, green beans, and dill, watermelon, and beet pickles.
She was a talented seamstress and embroidered and cross-stitched beautiful pictures, doilies and pillowcases. Lorraine sewed her niece Sandra’s wedding dress. She sewed pajamas for her sons, 3 grandsons and granddaughter. She also sewed aprons which her 7 great granddaughters wore.
Lorraine was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and past president of the Ladies Aide. She was a charter member of several clubs including Bowdle Mothers Club, Bowdle P.T.A. and Bowdle Healthcare Auxiliary. She was active in the Red Cross and other charity work. Lorraine also actively involved in the Bowdle 75th anniversary celebration. She participated in many bake sales and contributed to several cook books. She enjoyed gardening and with her mother Wilhelmina (Minnie), grew many chamomile plants for “kamilla” tea.
She watched the Lawrence Welk show every week through her 100th birthday. Lorraine worked on crossword puzzles until age 100. She read newspapers and many books over the years. She stayed awake reading until 1:00 each night with Ray sleeping right beside her. She was on the move every day and ate healthy with breakfast, larger meal at noon (dinner) and lighter for supper and a dessert each day.
Lorraine is survived by two sons Donald (Louella) Kurle of St. Albans, West Virginia and Charles (Vicki Kempf) Kurle of Fletcher, North Carolina, special niece Sandra (Rich) Olson, grandnephew Scott (Tracy) Olson and son Carson, nephew Chris Gerry, and grandniece Gina (Brad) Sherfinski and sons Noah and Luke.
Lorraine has 2 grandsons from Charles (Vicki) who are Charles (Sarah) with 4 daughters – Camille, Sophia, Ashlynn and Lanae; and Joseph (Marie) with 4 children – Abby, Natalie, Jenica and Joseph M. Kurle. Lorraine was blessed with these 7 great granddaughters and one great grandson with her youngest son. Lorraine’s oldest son Jacob (Myrna) was deceased Sept. 11, 2006. Myrna and their children Betsy Kurle – sons Jacob and Mitchell, and Michael (Amanda) – and son Jared live in Oklahoma. Lorraine is blessed with these 3 great grandsons from her oldest son’s family.
