He grew up in the country and then relocated because of the river they moved outside of where Kenel is now located. He attended the Dockter School (which was a country school) in the 1st grade. He went to grade school in Fort Yates, middle school in McLaughlin and then returned to boarding school in Fort Yates.
Eugene was 22 years old when he met Terry Weninger. They got married and had two children Nicole and Louis and made their home in Mobridge.
Eugene’s work history started when he was young. He worked in Kenel for the NYC youth program, worked for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Action where he learned and became a heavy equipment operator. He drove the ambulance for the IHS hospital and worked for WEB water laying pipes. He moved on to work for First Dakota for about twenty years doing painting and carpentry in homes traveling to many reservations. He painted in Mobridge and surrounding areas until his retirement in 2019 because of his health.
Eugene attended the Catholic church in Kenel growing up. He would talk about his days as an altar boy. His faith was very important to him.
Eugene liked all sports when he was growing up. He played basketball, baseball, track, football and some boxing. As an adult he played softball fast pitch and later slow pitch. He liked pitching on the team. He was a member of the Kenel team with league play and traveled all over for tournaments.
