Ida Margaret Larrington was born in Gettysburg on November 16, 1921, the youngest of four daughters to George Glenn and Ora Elena (Welch) Shawgo. She grew up on a farm west of Gettysburg until 1923 when the family moved to Gettysburg where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1940.
On August 21, 1940, Margaret was united in marriage to Leo Edward Larrington at the United Methodist Church in Pierre. To this union, two sons were born, Larry Mac and Robert Leo. They were happy to have their son Robert carry on the family farm. In later years, they enjoyed their winters in Mesa, Arizona.
Margaret was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg. For a couple of years after high school Margaret worked as a telephone operator, and after that she was solely a dedicated to working on the farm and tending to the family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an exceptional cook, entertainer, loved to square dance, play cards and games, and genuinely enjoyed her family and friends. A quote she would always say was, “To have a good neighbor was to be a good neighbor.” She truly was that. Margaret taught her whole family about love and caring for one another, and they always knew there would be pies lined up on the counter and the cookie jar would be full.
Margaret is survived by her son, Robert (Carol) Larrington, Gettysburg; daughter-in-law, Delores Larrington, Wilber, NE; six grandchildren: twins, Tamara (Dale) Kohmetscher, Deweese, NE and Tana (Rich) Hofstetter, Plymouth, NE, Dee Ann (Irvin) Kucera, Lawrence, NE, Robin (Darrel) Zoubek, Wilber, NE, Timothy (Sandra) Larrington, Waynesville, MO, and Thomas (Carol) Larrington, Yankton; two step grandchildren: Randy Hegstrom, Gettysburg and Jeff (Gina) Hegstrom, Watertown; 18 great grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo (1999); son Larry Mac (1994); sisters, twins Dorothy Harris and Minnie Pearl Shawgo and Alice Fenske; and grandchildren, Krista Renae Hofstetter and Lucas Mac Larrington Bowers.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Margaret’s arrangements.
