Margery Ann Drey was born August 8, 1933, to Milo E. and Mildred (Gatzemeyer) Drey in Gregory, South Dakota. She grew up with one brother, Jim, and two sisters, Mary Lou, and Fran. She attended school and graduated from Scotland High School in 1950. Margery attended USD from 1950-1954, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. While at USD, she was involved in many activities and had many honors. Her most notable were being a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and being elected Miss Vanity Fair. She taught school in Vermillion, San Tome, Venezuela, and Lawton, Oklahoma.
On January 21, 1956, Margery married Robert Houck in Scotland, South Dakota. They first made their home in Vermillion, where Bob finished law school. They then moved to Gettysburg, where she raised her family, helped at the abstract/law office, and served on many committees.
Marge was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was actively involved with the religious education program for many years. She attended daily mass on a regular basis until her health no longer allowed it. She will be remembered for her strong faith and the way she instilled that belief in her children and grandchildren.
Family and family values were extremely important to Marge. She was the pillar of support within her family. She enjoyed any time spent with her children and grandchildren, especially during the holidays. She always made the days special—dressing up as a witch on the front porch to pass out Halloween treats, having a “live” Santa to come to visit each year on Christmas Eve, and even allowing Bob to get the grandchildren bunnies at Easter. She loved life and gave us such an appreciation for family and holidays.
Marge loved the color red, geraniums each summer, and dressing up. She was known for bows in her hair, being an excellent cook, and entertaining as the best hostess.
Marge is survived by her husband, Bob, of Gettysburg; her children, Cathy (Kerry) Larson, Paul (Dianne) Houck all of Gettysburg, and Beth (Chad) Christopherson of Scottsdale, AZ; five grandchildren: Michael (Carly) Larson, Courtney (Dillon) Kjerstad, Kiara (Brian) Wanner, Katie (Justin) Waters, and Andrew Christopherson; step grandchildren: Jen Cornett (fiancé, Jamie Wiechmann) and Kari (Jordan) Nehls; 11 great grandchildren, Quinn, Leah, Brooks Michael, Kendra, Kaden, Grayson, Taelyn, Maddie, Carson, Brooks, and Charlie; and step great grandchildren: Jackson, Ella, Laila, Brittyn, and Dru.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jim, and two sisters, Mary Lou and Fran.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Margery’s arrangements.
