Lower Brule – April 21, 2022, Marian Mae Middletent, 85 yrs. Old, passed away peacefully at Sanford Care Center, Chamberlain, SD.
Funeral Services for Marian J. Middletent of Lower Brule, SD will be at 1:00 pm., Friday, April 29, 2022 at the Lower Brule Community Center, Lower Brule, SD with the burial in Holy Comforter Episcopal Cemetery in Lower Brule.
Wake services will be at 7 pm on Wednesday and Thursday at the Lower Brule Community Center in Lower Brule, SD.
Marian was born at home in Big Bend, SD on February 7, 1937 to Cecelia Sargent and Orson Middletent. Marian grew up in the Big Bend area until she was 10 years old then the family moved to Cedar Creek, SD. Marian made her home in Lower Brule, SD until she entered the Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain, SD. until she journeyed on to the spirit world.
Marian attended school at Ft. Thompson Old Agency boarding school and Flandreau Indian School. Growing up, Marian enjoyed spending time with her brothers and sisters, fishing, picking chokecherries, riding horseback, etc. Marian shared many stories of her childhood and her being the Big sister, she played a big part in her siblings lives. She helped where she could whether it be tending to the children, cooking or quilting. No matter what needed to be done, she was always helpful. Marian loved her children with all her heart, her grandchildren and her nieces and nephews and her siblings.
In her younger years, Marian was a jingle dress dancer and fancy shawl dancer. She was an avid seamstress throughout her adult life. She was always working on star quilts and patchwork quilts for the community. She enjoyed working on puzzles and working in her yard. Marian enjoyed going to yard sales and thrift stores, where she repurposed anything that she found there. Marian was very compassionate. She helped people out with clothes, etc. She fed stray animals and gave them shelter.
In her later years, Marian worked at the Golden Buffalo Casino and Motel as a laundress and porter until she retired.
Marian is survived by her sisters, Marie Middletent Charger, Pauline Middletent, Lower Brule, SD, her daughters, Camella Ann (Eagle Thunder) Mund and husband Bruce, Lawton, OK, Jennifer (Small Jumper) Wagaman, Chamberlain, SD, her sons, Clayton “Pickles” Big Eagle, Lower Brule, SD, Steven (Fabian) Big Eagle, Portland, OR., her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death, her parents, Cecelia Sargent and Orson Middletent, great grandson Arthur A. Pekah, three daughters, Annabelle Big Eagle, Estelle Eagle Thunder, Flossy Mae Eagle Thunder, her siblings June Horn, Marlene Crane, Nathan Middletent, Richard Middletent and Adrian Middletent, special friends Arthur Eagle Thunder, Erwin Small Jumper, and Clayton Big Eagle.
