Marilyn was born on October 6th, 1950 to Ramona Cottonwood and John Bendickson Jr. She attended Fort Yates High School and several years later she met Gary Sandland Sr. They dated for a year and finally got married on December 10th, 1976. Where they started a family and had five kids. Rhonda, Roxane, James, Gary Jr. and Becky Sandland-Gullickson. Marilyn and Gary got into the beef cattle ranching for 40 years. Marilyn would help her husband during the summer months of raking hay while he would bail it up. She wasn’t scared to jump in the tractor and work long hot summer days. During brandings she would cook up a feast for all who helped work cattle with her husband. Her potato salad was always our favorite and we didn’t mind sampling before she brought it out.
Marilyn went to nursing school and was a certified LPN and worked at the hospital and nursing homes in Mobridge, SD. She also kept her license updated throughout the years and would go back to the nursing home part time. Marilyn also worked at Standing Rock Housing, WIC, Head Start, and her last job was working at the Standing Rock Diabetes program where she took college online classes at United Tribes Technical College and got a degree in Nutrition Specialist. She finally retired in 2015 and enjoyed her time being at home with her family and watching her grandchildren play sports.
Marilyn’s favorite hobbies were watching Rodeos, PBR, going to movies, country concerts, gardening and watching her grandchildren play basketball, and football. Her favorite country singer is George Strait and when the CMA awards would air on television she would have him picked out within seconds of the show coming on. She would have her late daughter Roxane stand in ticket lines and sometimes it was pretty cold out but they had to see their favorite country singer no matter what.
Marilyn will be deeply missed by her husband Gary, her children Rhonda, the late Roxane, James, children Teresa and James Sandland Jr., Gary, children, Ashlynn and Kaden Sandland, Becky and Charles Gullickson. Her brothers Robert, Terrence, and Ivan Bendickson, Raymond Paske and family. Her best friend Suzanne Shields and Alvin Morrison.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents Ramona Cottonwood, John Bendickson Jr.; her grandparents Jerome and Benedicta Cottonwood. Her sisters Michelle Netterville, Greta Bendickson and her late daughter Roxane Sandland.
We would like to say thank you to the doctors and nurses that took care of Marilyn during her time at the Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, ND.
Marilyn had many friends and we are deeply sorry if we omitted any of them.
