Marilyn Joyce King was born June 27, 1944 in Shelby, Michigan, to Rev. Paul and Beatrice Ramona Allison Jones King. They lived on a fruit farm on the shores of Lake Michigan in the little town of Pierport, Michigan. Marilyn attended grade school in Grand Rapids, Michigan until they moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Wakefield where she continued her education and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1962. After graduation she worked at Rudy’s Resort in Manitowish Waters. Marilyn then moved to Minneapolis, MN and worked for Investors Diversified from 1963 to 1969.
Marilyn married Eugene Clarence Schaefbauer on September 24, 1966 in Minneapolis, MN. In 1970, they moved to Herreid, SD to own and operate Gene’s Jack & Jill Grocery store. She worked at the store for 27 years until they sold it. Marilyn then worked at Rosenbluth International in Linton, ND and Kroontje Law Office in Herreid.
As a young girl, Marilyn was a member of East Leonard Baptist Church in Grand Rapids and later Wakefield’s First Baptist Church. During this time, her father requested she learn to play the piano so she could be his pianist for the hymns during his church services. After moving to Herreid, Marilyn joined the Herreid Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years, Jet Cadet leader, helped with summer bible school, and was an accomplished pianist. She taught many generations to love singing praises to God each Sunday morning during opening activities.
She enjoyed having all of her family around, especially her grandchildren. She liked to cook, bake, tend to her garden and beautiful flowers, can and preserve garden produce that she would share with family and neighbors, spent many hours playing the piano, and camping and fishing with Gene. Marilyn loved to travel and see the beautiful world that God had created. Nothing made Marilyn happier than hosting family gatherings where she would sit back and take in all the noise, excitement, and just cherish time spent with the family God had blessed her with.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Gene and four sons: Kevin and girlfriend Kallyn Reinert, Mobridge SD, Brian and Christi, Mandan, ND, David and Heidi, Herreid, SD, Craig and Heidi, Mobridge, SD, 11 grandchildren, Tyler, Cody and wife Cara, Alexa, Hayley, Ashlin, Garret, Rachel, Cooper, Logan and wife Megan, Micah, and Jake.
