PIERRE, SD – Marilyn Spaid, 91, of Pierre and formerly of Blunt, SD, took her last breath on July 31, 2024, at Edgewood in Pierre. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am on Monday, August 5, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Pierre, with visitation for one hour prior. Burial will take place that afternoon at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt.
Marilyn H Eldridge Spaid, born July 17, 1933 in a birthing home in Pierre. She was the youngest of four girls born to Frederick Willard Eldridge & Prudence (Gould) Eldridge. She and her sisters had to work outside helping her dad run the ranch south of Ft Pierre.
She attended grade school on the family ranch south of Ft. Pierre until she was the only one left in the school. Marilyn finished her education, 6th through 12th grade, in Pierre SD. Marilyn attended college at Black Hills State, earning a degree in teaching. After graduating college, she taught at Felicia school for a short time.
During high school she belonged to Jobs Daughters and was an honored queen and held many offices during that time. She was initiated into the East Star by her mother Prudence, who was the Worthy Matron. In 1953 Marilyn transferred to the Blunt Order of Eastern Star. Marilyn received her 25- and 50-year membership pin, was Worthy Matron and held many offices during her reign.
On September 8, 1951, she married Robert (Bob) W Spaid. They moved to Denver while he was a Military Policeman in the Airforce. While in Denver she worked for a telephone company’s answering service and an office assistant for a Broker.
After Bob’s discharge from the service, they moved back to the Spaid family farm and raised four boys and 1 girl.
Marilyn had many hobbies: sewing, refinishing antiques, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, swimming at the YMCA and walking. She spent countless hours cooking for the farm crew and her family. She loved auction sales and garage sales. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. She was a very hard worker, never complained, biggest smile with sparkling eyes. Marilyn always welcomed everyone into her home.
Member of the First United Methodist Church; President & Secretary of UMW. President & Secretary of the Blunt Study Club. Eastern Star, Ft. Pierre & Blunt – Worthy Matron, several Committees, Grand Representative of Idaho to SD, Conductress, Marshall, Electa, Associate Matron, Ruth and Martha.
She is survived by her son’s Russell (Candy) Spaid of Pierre; Ronald Spaid of Blunt: Robert (Connie) Spaid of Blunt; and daughter Robin Auch (Randy Bauer) of Pierre; Grandchildren; RanDi Spaid (Abe Elder); Rocky Spaid; Nathan Auch (Alisa Whitaker); Jeremy Auch; Shannon Forsch (Jordan), Jessica Burns, Kelsey (Jason) Peterson, Adrienne (Pat) Hall, Ross Big Eagle. Great-grandchildren: Ryler Elder, Emerson Deal, Griffin and Brooks Auch, Brynlee and Conrad Peterson, and Jayden Hall.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three older sisters, Donna Slaathaug, Georgia Demmers, Rae McLean, her husband Robert, and son Richard.
