Marques Cory-Lee High Elk, born on November 2, 1998, in Pierre, South Dakota. He was the beloved firstborn son of Marques and Gracie (Shaving) and a cherished brother to Gwyneth, Eli, Phoebe, Gia, Cory, and Jimmi Jo.
Marques attended school in Rapid City, SD, Bismarck, ND, and Eagle Butte, SD. The Box Elder Job Corps in Nemo, SD is where he completed his high school diploma and GED; making many friends and memories wherever he went.
Marques had a zest for life that was evident in his many hobbies. He loved listening to music, whether it was the classic country sounds of Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash or the rock anthems of Rob Zombie and Slipknot. His musical taste extended to rap and R&B, with favorites like Juice WRLD, Mac Miller, and Suicideboys. Marques found joy in driving around, chilling with friends, watching movies, playing Apex Legends, the latest NBA 2k and Call of Duty on the PlayStation and sharing meals that reminded him of home, especially his mom’s cooking, lasagna, tater tot casserole, and his grandma Joyce’s cabbage soup.
He had a special bond with his first niece, Astrid October. He walked her to her first day of HeadStart and didn’t want to leave her. He kept saying, “ok, that’s enough, go get her.”
Friends and family recall him as Baby Marques or Big M, a young man with a big heart who cared deeply for those around him. His sense of humor and ability to offer comfort made him a vital presence in the lives of many; he knew just when someone needed a hug or a listening ear.
Marques was a sports enthusiast, passionately supporting the LA Clippers, North Carolina Tar Heels, and the Seattle Seahawks. He also enjoyed watching shows like Rick and Morty, The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and Bob’s Burgers.
He will be remembered not only for his love of music and food but for the lasting impact he had on the hearts of those who knew him.
His LaLa Jaws, Uncle Babe Lee, Uncle Deon, LaLa Frank, brother Taran Ducheneaux, Aunt Cherie, Maternal and Paternal great grandparents all welcome him to the star nation.
He is survived by his parents; siblings; his special niece Astrid; cousin Kayla; maternal grandmother Madeline Handboy; Aunt Sara; paternal grandfather Fred; grandmother Colleen; aunt Gabby; and uncles, Luther and Kirk.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Marques’ arrangements.
