PIERRE, SD – Marvin “Dean” Cox, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Avera Maryhouse in Pierre. Born on June 4, 1940, in Pillager, Minnesota, to Charles D. and Margret E. (Turman) Cox. Marvin’s early years on the family farm were filled with the values of hard work and dedication, traits that would define him throughout his life as a computer programmer.
He graduated from Mound Minnesota High School, and went on to attend college where he played for in the band for the college choir.
He met his beloved wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Steeg, at church, where her attraction to his innate kindness sparked a lifelong partnership. They married June 4, 1964 in North Sioux City, South Dakota. They moved to Pierre in 1972 where Dean began his carrier as a computer programmer for the State of South Dakota. He was known for his meticulous work serving for 20 years before retiring in 1992.
An avid outdoorsman, Marvin loved to hunt and was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association.
Dean is survived by his wife, Dottie; son James; both of Pierre his brothers C. Donald (Joylene) of New Mexico and Raymond D. of Denver, Colorado and sister Dorothy Pague of New Mexico.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jim D. Cox.
