PIERRE, SD – Marvin “Sonny” Olson, 96, of Pierre, passed away June 7, 2025.

Interment: 1:30pm (Mountain Std Time), Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD
Marvin Tyler “Sonny” Olson, aged 96, of Pierre, South Dakota, and formerly of Esmond, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, at Avera-Maryhouse. Born on May 4, 1929, in Esmond, ND, he was the son of Tillie Bertina Olson and Oscar Wold. Tillie later married Clarence Iden Toso Sr.
Marvin honorably served his country as a member of the United States Armed Forces in Korea from 1952 to 1954, situated north of Seoul. For his service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning to South Dakota, he dedicated 50 years to working on Asmussen’s farms, a testament to his commitment and hard work.
On June 3, 2000, Marvin married the love of his life, Carol Jean Keiper, and they enjoyed 25 years of joyous marriage. Together, they forged a life filled with love, companionship, and shared interests, which included watching sports and exploring yard sales. A man of faith, Marvin was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church and proudly affiliated with the American Legion, demonstrating his continued commitment to community and country.
Marvin is survived by his cherished wife, Carol Olson of Pierre, SD; his brothers, Leroy Toso of Starkweather, ND, Darrel (Wanda) Toso of Opelika, Alabama, Clarence Toso of Devils Lake, ND; and his sisters, Sandra (Gary) Sears of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Joan Nelson of Devils Lake, ND. His life was enriched by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will remember him fondly for his generous spirit and kind heart.
His departure was preceded by his parents, Tillie and Clarence Toso, his biological father, Oscar Wold, and his siblings, Eugene Toso, Stanley (Martha) Toso, Sherman Toso, Roger Toso, Delores (Lawrence) Doyle, and Gloria (John) Micka. Also preceding him were his brothers-in-law Hans Torsten (Lorraine) Olsson, Murrell Nelson, Louis (Shirley) Freeman, and sisters-in-law JoAnn Toso and Linda Toso. His grandparents, along with many aunts, uncles, and other cherished relatives, greeted him at his journey’s end.
