Mary Ellen Jakeway, 78, of Redfield, SD, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Eastern Star Nursing Home in Redfield.

Mary Ellen O’Day was born on November 20, 1946, in Pierre, SD, to Herbert “Bud” and Eileen (Nelson) O’Day.  She was the oldest of 10 children and attended school in Pierre.

On October 22, 1963, she married Thomas Stewart Jacobs in Pierre.  To this union, three children were born.  She married James Jakeway on December 19, 1986.  She moved to Redfield in April of 2020.

Mary Ellen spent most of her life providing care for others in many fields, including hospitals, nursing homes, foster care, and daycare.  She enjoyed spending time with her family.  Some of her many hobbies included sewing, cooking, reading, playing cards, fishing, and camping.

Mary Ellen is survived by her children:  Kayleen Winterberg (Gerald Cadotte) of Mobridge, SD, Malinda (Steve) Buranen, and Jonathan (Karen) Jacobs, all of Redfield.  She is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Cindy (Greg) Malsam of Pierre; brother Ray (Karla) O’Day of Blunt, SD; brother Roy (Robin) O’Day of Pierre, SD; sister Wendy (Warren) Peterson of Hoven, SD; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, brothers: Jerry O’Day, Micheal O’Day, and Patrick O’Day, and sisters: Rose O’Day, and Kathy Bellander.
