Mary Hanson, 91, of Gettysburg, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Dow Rummel Village, Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 15, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg, with Fr. Jerry Kopel presiding. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Gettysburg. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m.– 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the church.
Mary Ellen Larrington Hanson, daughter of John and Lucy (Pulliam) Larrington, wife of Derald James Hanson, was born September 10, 1929 in Gettysburg, SD.
Mary attended Gettysburg High School where she was active in many school groups. She married Derald Hanson on October 22, 1947 and they had five children: David, Patty, Bill, Diana, and Dean. They lived on the family farm for 60 years before they moved into an apartment in town. She held the offices of President and Secretary of the Sacred Heart Altar Society and she taught Catechism for five years.
Derald and Mary enjoyed taking many trips to different parts of the United States and Europe and they made friends wherever they traveled. They also enjoyed playing cards and every morning for several years they would play a game or two of Cribbage.
Mary is survived by her children, David (Maureen) Hanson, Granbury Texas, Patty (Jerry) Jones, Spencer, Iowa, Bill (Cheryl) Hanson, Sioux Falls, SD, Diana Anderson, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law, Jackie Hanson, Gettysburg, SD; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret Larrington; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband; son, Dean; son-in-law, Curt; parents; brothers: Leo Larrington, Howard Larrington, John Larrington, Jr., and Max Larrington; and sisters: Oletha Rausch and Betty Boulding.
Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved having the whole family around the large farmhouse table for a delicious holiday meal followed by the traditional card game called Dimes. She will be missed by all of us!!!
