Mary Knife, 31, of Eagle Butte, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Monument Health, Rapid City.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., MDT, Friday, June 10, 2022 at Takini School Gym, Takini. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Red Scaffold. Wake services will be 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the school with a procession from Hwy 14 and Takini road junction at 4:00 p.m.

Mary Magdeline “Menace” Knife was born to the late Ted and Peggy Knife on January 11, 1991 in Pierre, South Dakota. “Menace” grew up in the community of Red Scaffold and she loved her homestead in Felix Creek, South Dakota. Mary also moved to Eagle Butte with her mother and lived with her Aunt Beverly’s family for a time. There she grew up with her cousins, who she thought of as brothers and sisters, Dardi, Kacie, Katie, Delmar Jr., and Jarrett. She loved traveling with her parents throughout the state of South Dakota and other states.

Mary started school at Red Scaffold Headstart and graduated, and then went on to go to school at Takini School from kindergarten all the way through her senior year in 2009. While she was attending Takini School she played volleyball and basketball. In 2008 during her junior year in high school, she was on the Takini Lady Skyhawk basketball team that won the Dakota Oyate Challenge Championship in Huron, SD. Her high school best friends, or “sisters”, were Summer Afraid Of Hawk, Kristi Kelly, Sara Widow, Allison Red Buffalo (Charging Eagle), Krista Bear Stops, Kella Reynolds, and the late Jonnie Briggs.

Mary was also a big Los Angeles Laker fan and was also a huge fan of Kobe Bryant. When she graduated high school in 2009, her and 5 of her classmates and 3 chaperones traveled to Denver, Colorado to watch a Western Conference Finals Game between The Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets. Mary was decked out in Kobe Bryant gear and was very happy she got to watch her favorite player.

Mary attended UTECH in Bismarck, ND and Oglala Lakota College and received credits for Tribal Law.

Later in life on November 23, 2014, she welcomed her wonderful son Matthew Quade Knife, who she loved dearly, into this wonderful world. Mary loved helping with any family church activities and community events.

In 2020 Mary started noticing health issues with herself and also her mother as well. Mary was always around her mother after the passing of her father in 2010, so they moved to Eagle Butte, SD so they would be closer to a health facility. After the passing of her mother on April 28, 2022, Mary also got sick, and she was transported to Bismarck, ND. After being cleared from Bismarck hospital she returned to her son back in Eagle Butte, SD. But then she became sick one more time in Rapid City, SD. She eventually lost her life on May 26, 2022 and began her journey home to the spirit world.

Mary is survived by her son Matthew Knife, and siblings Ted Jr. (Dolly) Knife, Wendell (Joey) Knife, Randall (Stacy) Knife, and Georgette Knife; Godparents, Harold and Geraldine Condon; relatives: Delight Halfred, Jenny Halfred, Karah Condon, Jordan Knife, Phil Knife, Brittney Brewer, Lonnie Brewer, Memphis Brewer, Elijah Brewer, Peyton Knife, Asa Alu Knife, Clayton Knife, Charlie (Heather) Knife, Coy (Justice) Knife, Calynn (Tyler) Gunville, Shaun, Shauna, Jacob Knife, Justin Knife, Jaylen Knife, Jeffery Red Tomahawk, Beverly (Delmar) Clown, Helene (Adrian) Martinez, Willie Circle Eagle,  Joy Circle Eagle, Desiree Clown, Felicia Circle Eagle, Conroy Clown, Rolynn Clown, Dardi Clown, Delmar Clown Jr., Brandon Clown, RJ Lawrence, Krystal, Krystan and Katee Circle Eagle, Kaven, Noah, and Danny, Dean Dupris, Velma (Tator) Kills Back, Moses High Elk, Lillian White Wolf, Huey (Michelle), Kimberly, Crissy White Wolf, Katie, Kenzie, Kel’lyn, Robert, Joseph, Tyree, Kayliah, Leighton, Saajen, Lauryn, Damien, Wayanka, and Masani.

Greeting her are her parents, the late Ted and Peggy Knife; uncles, Bevin Circle Eagle Jr. and Bobby Jo Circle Eagle; grandparents, Bevin Circle Eagle Sr. and Cecelia Circle Eagle; aunt, Marilyn Circle Eagle; cousins, Randon Clown and Brady Paul Knife; brother, Dion Knife; and best friends, Jonnie Briggs, Keiko Iron Hawk, Cheron Sitting Crow, and LaVoni Toki.
