MILLER, SD –
Mary Shaw, 90, of Miller, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 6, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, Miller, Pastor Robert Brooks, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Mary can be honored by donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital; Hyde County Senior Center, 103 Iowa Ave N, Highmore, SD 57345; or Miller Senior Citizens Center, 115 W 2nd St, Miller SD 57362.
Mary was the fifth child of eight born to Jesse and Lorraine (Joyner) Fieldsend. Mary and her seven siblings lost their parents at an early age. Because of a strong sense of love and family, their father’s sister “Auntie” (Laura) and husband, Jay Rath welcomed them into their home. Mary and her siblings were eternally grateful, as this made it possible for them to stay together as a family.
As a young teenager, Mary left home for Rapid City, SD, where she met and eventually married Eugene (Gene) Shaw. Due to Gene’s career with the federal Department of Justice, they resided in Arizona, North Dakota, British Columbia, Michigan, and eventually Scobey, Montana. When Gene retired, they remained in Scobey until 2012, when they returned to South Dakota. While in Scobey, Mary and Gene had owned and operated two small businesses – a fast-food drive-in and a floral shop.
Mary enjoyed and became proficient in Hardanger embroidery (a form of needlecraft involving counted and drawn thread work) – sharing many of her finished works with family and friends. Mary especially cherished her times visiting with family during several summer trips to Pennsylvania and retreats to the Black Hills with her sisters “the sisters”. While “the sisters” didn’t share too many details about their adventures and shenanigans, we cousins got the idea that there was much laughter and gossip.
She is survived by her son, Tony (Sheila); grandchildren: Rebecca (Daniel) Whitsel, Stacey Batista, and Aaron (Jazmin) Shaw; great-granddaughters: Julianna, Ava, and Saylor Whitsel and Alexis, Genevieve, and Mylie Batista; sisters: Kay Henson and Marlys Marlow; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; her parents: Jesse and Lorraine; Auntie and Jay Rath; brothers: Willis and Neil Fieldsend; and sisters: Darlene Konrad, Janice Houdek, and Laura Spargur.
