Maurine was born December 29, 1922, at Eagle Butte, South Dakota to Alvin and Elna (Bengtson) Johnson at their farm home. She lived with her parents on the homestead farm, attending school in Eagle Butte all 12 years, graduating in 1940. She attended Northern State College in Aberdeen from 1940 to 1942, graduating with a two-year certificate. Following her graduation, she taught one year at the Cheyenne Agency.
She then moved to Minneapolis, MN, and worked during the war at the Twin Cities Ordnance Plant as a secretary. On July 29, 1944, she married Dale Auchampach of Ipswich in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was stationed in the Air Force. She was employed at Kirtland Field Air Base until her husband was transferred. After his discharge, they lived in Ipswich for a short time until they moved to Brookings, South Dakota, where they resided for four years while her husband earned his degree in pharmacy. In 1951 they moved to Chamberlain, South Dakota, and in 1953 moved to Faulkton where she has since resided.
Maurine was a member of the United Church of Faulkton where she served on many boards of the church and was co-chairman of the planning committee for the new sanctuary. She was Sunday School Superintendent for many years and taught Sunday school for 20 years. She was the church secretary for eight years. She has also been active in the United Methodist Women, having held offices on the local level, and she was a district officer for eight years. She enjoyed several summers as a camp counselor.
Other activities included Care Center Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. Maurine was also involved, along with her husband, in operating Dale’s Pharmacy in Faulkton for 30 years. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and visiting family and friends. Mom is fondly remembered as the “secretary of labor” for the extensive list of chores to be completed whenever family visited.
She is survived by her two sons: Thomas (Louise) Auchampach, Boise, ID, and Richard (Karen) Auchampach, Central City, SD; daughter: Jill Connelly, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
