Monte “Buckshot” Knight, 73, of south Dupree, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in Vacaville, CA with Ms. Mary Reeves by his side.
Services will be a mix of traditional and contemporary practices. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. MST, Friday, February 25, 2022 at Landmark Hall in Eagle Butte. Burial and traditional practices will occur at a later time (TBD).
Monte Curtis Knight was born August 8, 1948 in Pierre, South Dakota to Jess A. and Edith (Laplante) Knight. He was the first child and eldest of eight children. The name “Buckshot” was given to him by his Grandfather Wally Knight, after the pro roper “Buckshot” Sorrels.
Buck attended St. Joseph Indian school, and Eagle Butte public school. He quit school early to enlist in the Army, and later attained his GED. While he was in the Army, he spent time in Germany, and fought in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the 101 Airborne “Screaming Eagles” Division. He spent the majority of his life traveling the world, and practicing spiritual traditions of his Lakota heritage.
Buck was a free-wheeling, risk taking, story-telling character. The people he met would say he was complicated, and most would think their lives were richer for having known him. And for all of his adventures, he never missed an opportunity to tell anyone that would listen how proud he was of his children, Dawnita Knight (Sherry Keller Knight), Corrinne Mark & Ronni Taylor (Terri Lynn Fried).
Buckshot will be missed by his daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren: Dawnita Knight (grandson Sonny Dutchover and great granddaughter Emelia Dutchover), Corrinne (Justin) Mark (grandsons Teagan & Weldon), and Ronni (Will) Taylor; brothers and sisters: Lona Knight, Tom & Carol Knight, Bill Knight, Jess “JR” Knight & Marsha Lytle, Lucy Knight, and Mark & Connie Knight.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Jess A. and Edtih Knight; and one brother, Jeffery Knight.
Buckshot will be missed by friends and family and was loved by many.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Buckshot’s arrangements.
