Monte passed away Monday, September 9, 2024, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.
Monte was born on February 25, 1943, in Bismarck, ND to Henry and Elsie (Scherbinski) Hauck. Monte lived with his parents on the Scherbinski Farm 4 miles west of Mclaughlin, SD until 1950 when the family moved to town. Mclaughlin became Monte’s lifelong home where he lived and attended school.
Following high school Monte spent the next few years with two of his best friends, Ray Goehring and Melvin Schanzenbach, helping them with training, breaking and taking care of their horses. Together they traveled the Midwest racing thoroughbreds.
On August 8, 1967, Monte married his sweetheart Deloris (Dee) Hauck, and they spent the next 57 years together. The newlyweds lived behind the grocery store the first four years of their marriage. It was during this time that they suffered a tragic loss at the stillbirth of their first daughter, Patricia Marie. Although this was heartbreaking for Monte and Dee, they were eventually able to laugh and smile again, and in 1970, they were blessed with the birth of their second daughter, Cindy.
In 1971 Monte and Dee moved south of Mclaughlin and Monte started working for Young, Incorporated as a farmer and truck driver, hauling machinery near and far for the implement dealership. Six years after they moved, Monte and Dee were overjoyed with the birth of their only son, Todd. Monte began sharing his love of farm animals with his children by adding horses, cows, pigs, donkeys, goats, rabbits, and chickens to the family. Both Cindy and Todd have many trophies and ribbons from showing their beloved animals at the county fair.
In 1989 Monte and Dee moved to the east side of McLaughlin where they still lived, when this past April Monte had several strokes which resulted in his eventual stay at the Miller Pointe care center in Mandan for the last six months.
For a good part of his life, Monte drove trucks and farmed with local businesses including Hagger Ranch, South Dakota Wheat Growers, Pfeifer, Inc., and Mizera Farms. Monte also had his own custom hay grinding business. Monte has always enjoyed putting up hay, which he did until last year. If he had not had a stroke, guaranteed he would have been crawling up in the tractor this past summer.
Monte could be gruff on the exterior, but he had a soft heart, a gentle nature and a true concern for others. He was secretly a big soft teddy bear and would do whatever he could to help anyone who needed it. He loved to visit, and he loved going for coffee with his friends, often shaking dice to see who would have to pay for the coffee. He was a fan of local sports and rodeos and he attended as many events as he could. He loved listening to gospel music, he loved traveling to Minnesota to spend time with his sisters, and he loved his family.
Monte is survived by his wife Deloris, sister Betty (Jim) Boatman, North Branch, MN, daughter Cindy Hauck (Darien Red Stone), Plainview, TX, son Todd Hauck (Greta Baker), Fort Yates, ND, grandsons Callin Greff, LaMoure, ND, Cody Comeau (Maddie Breidenbach), Aberdeen, SD, granddaughters Paulette White Magpie Seibel (Brad Morino), Bismarck, ND, Sarah White Magpie Seibel (Thomas Otter Robe), Bullhead, SD, 9 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and many good friends.
Monte is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Elsie Hauck, daughter Patty Hauck, sisters Delores Friez and Delila Buechler, and grandson Milton White Magpie Seibel.
