Myrna Kay (Baer) Holzer was born February 2, 1944, in Mobridge, SD to Reinhold (Ike) and Ann (Blondo) Baer. She was welcomed into the world by two older brothers, George (Snooks) and Larry, and an older sister, Judy. Later, she would join them in welcoming her younger sister, Rosemary, into the family.
Myrna attended Mobridge Public High School, where she trudged through the snow each winter until her graduation in May of 1962. Upon graduation, she continued her work at the Mobridge Coca-Cola plant. Two years after graduating, Myrna met Daniel (Danny) Holzer at a dance in McLaughlin. They dated off and on until Danny went into the Army in 1965—this didn’t stop them from keeping in touch. Her letters provided him company until he returned in August of 1967 and proposed to Myrna in early December of the same year.
Danny and Myrna had a short engagement and married on April 27, 1968, at the Mobridge Catholic Church in Mobridge, SD. They made their home in Mobridge while Danny worked at MDU and Myrna continued to work at the Coca-Cola plant. She worked there until December of 1968. On February 4, 1969, Danny and Myrna welcomed their first child, a precious baby boy, Timothy Wade. Later, on November 21, 1971, they welcomed an adorable baby girl, Dawn Marie, to complete the family. Although Danny was the one in the military, Myrna was the General when it came to their kids. She provided an organized home but wasn’t afraid to bend her own rules once in a while.
Danny and Myrna lived in Mobridge until August 1977 when Danny was transferred to MDU in Mandan, ND. They remained there until the fall of 1978 when they moved to Trail City, SD. She later welcomed to the family, Steph (Laundreaux) Holzer who married Tim in 1991, when the family grew once more. To Myrna’s excitement, she became a grandmother for the first time on February 21, 1993, to Kaitlin McKenzie Holzer, the daughter of Tim and Steph. With continued excitement, she saw her second grandchild, Caleb Joshua Timmerman, enter the world on October 19, 1998, the son of Dawn. They delighted in her presence and her in theirs. Myrna became known as “mermaid” to her grandchildren much to her dismay but loved them anyway.
Myrna experienced a fulfilling life of perms, friends, and laughs in Trail City until September 21, 2016, when they moved to Mobridge to be near family, which Myrna had wanted for a long time. Myrna was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Sioux Falls, SD in December of 2021. She was treated at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, ND for the remainder of her life. She passed away peacefully on October 21, 2022, at 2:54 AM at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Myrna was preceded in death by her mom, Ann; dad, Ike; brother, Larry; and brother, Snooks.
