Myrtle Miller was born October 11, 1948 in Pierre, South Dakota to Francis Wayne and Viola (Schmitgen) Miller. Myrtle and her older brother, Richard, spent their young lives growing up in Pierre
and graduated from Riggs High School in 1967. The family home on Dakota Street played an important role in Myrtle’s future as this is where she met and fell in love with her next-door neighbor, Larry Crandell. After a four-year courtship Myrtle and Larry were married in June 1976 and to this union they welcomed two daughters, Eileen and Brenda.
Myrtle worked in the hospital lab from 1965 right up to February 17, 1980, the day their first daughter, Eileen, was born followed by daughter Brenda’s birth on January 13, 1983. Myrtle stayed at home and raised her daughters until they started school upon which time, she began working at Sandvigs, later it became Runnings. She also worked at the Optical Store and Sutley’s, both in Pierre. Myrtle remained in Pierre after her husband, Larry, passed away in November 1991 and in 1999 she met Ron Walgamuth. Their bond of friendship continued until Ron’s death in November 2019. After
Ron’s death Myrtle moved to Lincoln Apartments where she made many friends and she thoroughly loved every activity offered; bingo, playing left, right, center, cards and working puzzles. She felt a lot of joy and sense of freedom when she drove her scooter around Pierre, especially in Griffin Park and riding on the bike path along the Missouri River. Dakotamart and Hobby Lobby were at the top of her list when she shopped but at home and in her quiet moments she loved to crochet while listening to country music surrounded by her collection of stuffed dogs.
