Myrtle was born on June 24, 1937 at Irene, SD to Everett and Christine “Babe” McChristy. She graduated from Irene High School in 1955 and spent the next year working as a nurses aide at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. In August 1956, Myrtle entered the nursing program at Pierre School of Practical Nursing. Following graduation, she enrolled in a post-graduate program in Surgery and Obstetrical Nursing. Myrtle spent two years working in the surgery department at St Mary’s Hospital in Pierre.
In 1960, she went to work at Medical Associates Clinic and spent the next 43 years working side by side with Dr. B.O. Lindbloom. The pair retired together in 2003.
On September 3, 1962, Myrtle married H. Duane Jackson in Pierre, SD. To this union, three children were born. Myrtle was an avid bowler. She and Duane bowled in a mixed doubles league for over 40 years and she also bowled in a women’s league for many years.
Myrtle loved spending time with and taking care of her grandchildren. All the kids knew grandma was special and they chose spending time with grandma over anything else.
Myrtle was a caretaker, both at the clinic and at home. She spent many evenings on the phone with patients – she was the mom her children would call for medical advice for themselves, their friends and family. Even when she moved into assisted living, she cared for other residents.
Myrtle was such an amazing, caring nurse that both Governor Janklow and Governor Rounds proclaimed a day for her. The first one was on the anniversary of her 40th year at Medical Associates Clinic; the second was on the day she retired from nursing. Myrtle was the kind of lady that always had a smile on her face, and never complained – even at the end.
Grateful for sharing her life are her three children, Joan Rogotzke, Pierre, and grandson, Jackson; Kent Jackson, Pierre, and grandsons, Kolton, Lane and Darin, and great-grandson, Randall; and Dawn (Shane) Bonham, Sioux Falls and grandchildren, Alissa (Evan), Payton, Makenzi and Brenan; Brother-in-law Howard Jackson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; parents, Everett and Babe McChristy; Duane’s parents, Harvey and Gertrude Jackson; her sister and brother-in-law, Lonnie and Soogie LaFave; a niece, Linda; and one granddaughter, Hailey.
