Nancy Ann Hanson Kirkpatrick, age 89, of Pierre, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Nancy was born on August 17, 1935, in Watertown, South Dakota, to Lyndon Victor Sr. and Elizabeth Falk Hanson. In her early years, her family moved to California briefly before returning to Watertown. They eventually made their home in Pierre, where Nancy spent the majority of her life.
She was a 1953 graduate of Pierre High School, where she participated in baton twirling and band. She later attended Northern State College. Nancy built a distinguished 30-year career working for the State of South Dakota and, alongside her husband Wayne, co-owned and operated Modern Electric for 20 years.
On April 30, 1958, Nancy married Wayne Kirkpatrick, beginning a devoted partnership that lasted 67 years. They snuck away to elope in Rapid City and notified their family of their nuptials by sending a telegraph and went on to enjoy their honeymoon in the Black Hills. Together, they built a life filled with love, support, and shared experiences. They were blessed with two children: Tim (Deb) Kirkpatrick of Pierre, SD, and Cathy Kirkpatrick of Silt, CO. Nancy’s greatest joys were her grandchildren—Jennifer (Jordan) Opp, Amy (Scott) Harris, Melissa (Kody) Bullock, Jerry (Cassie) Slafkes, and Liz Slafkes—and her great-grandchildren Autumn, Olivia, and Owen Harris, and Henry, Elsie, Amelia, Charles, Laurel, and Merryn Slafkes.
Nancy had many passions throughout her life, including camping, square dancing, genealogy, and traveling after retirement. Her happiest moments were those spent with her family, both near and far. She also had a strong connection to her roots and took great pride in researching and preserving her family history.
She is survived by her loving husband Wayne; her children and their families; her brothers Vic Hanson and Dave (Patty) Hanson; her special niece Kelsey (Troy) Roth; and numerous other, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Doug Hanson.
Nancy will be remembered for her warmth, resilience, and the deep love she had for her family and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
