Odon Corr, 87, of Wessington Springs, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at the Avera Weskota Memorial Hospital in Wessington Springs.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 19, 2021 at the Wessington Springs United Methodist Church, Wessington Springs, South Dakota.  Visitation will be 2 hours prior to service at the church.  Burial will be held at Summit Cemetery in Summit, South Dakota at a later date. Masks are encouraged at all services.

Odon Edward Corr was born Sept 24, 1933 in Ellendale, MN to Edward and Borghild (Halvorson) Corr.  In 1937, his family moved to a farm near Summit, SD and later moved into town where his mother and siblings ran the Summit Cafe.  He learned to skin and trap from his mother, loved riding horses, and enjoyed the Spring Valley Rodeo Club on Sundays.  After graduating from Summit High School, he married Carolyn Lien in 1954 and to this union 4 children were born.  Also, in 1954, Odon enlisted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, and was stationed in Alaska where he was assigned to the ski patrol. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he attended three years at SDSU.

In 1962, Odon accepted a position with the Fur, Fish and Game and moved his family to Miller.  The next 20 years were spent trying to control the coyote population for the state government.  Along the trapline, he found numerous ranch and farm friends that continued to be a large part of his life.  He trapped privately in the 1970’s when furs were at a premium.  In 1981, he began his next 15 years working for the federal government in animal damage control, living in Steele, ND.  In 1996, he retired and moved to his heaven on earth, the “Corr Ranch”, near Wessington Springs.  In 2007, Odon married Joan Husman.

Odon raised registered Airedale Terriers for many years.  His Airedale bloodline is spread throughout the United States.  Later, his well-known Jackdale breed became used by many hunters and trappers throughout America.

Odon had a deep respect and passion for animals and the outdoors.  Hunting, trapping, and fishing were all second nature to Odon and he thoroughly enjoyed the stories behind all the adventures. He was a long-time member of Fur Takers of America and National Trappers Association.  He annually traveled to national conventions where he often demonstrated his trapping skills and peddled his educational DVD on coyote trapping.  The conventions became an annual reunion for many of his trapping friends throughout the nation.

Odon is fondly remembered by his family, including his children: daughter, Jodie (Michael) Dirksen, Nancy (Wayne Kolbeck) Froning, and Karie (Brian VanBuren) Waters; grandchildren: Blake (Rachael) Dirksen, Riley (Loni) Dirksen, Margaret (Alex) Rechkemmer, Amber (Kevin) Werdel, Keaton Corr, Jerrica (Bronze) Charbonneau, Shawn (Jesse) Block, Weston (Chelsea) Waters, Matt (Natasha) Waters; 11 great grandchildren; sisters: Anita (Keith) Sharf, Barb (Kent) McCreight; cousins: Omar (Janice) Halvorson, Mary (Al) Goulet; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Odon was preceded in death by both wives, sister, Corinne Kohn; son, Gregory Corr; son in law, David Froning; and great grandchild, Oliver Block.
