Otto Nehlich, 95, Eureka, SD, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at the Baptist Healthcare Center in Bismarck, ND.
Otto Henry Nehlich, son of Anna (Ritter) and Jacob Nehlich, Jr., was born at a farmstead near Eureka on June 13, 1927. He was raised on a farm four miles south and one mile west of town. He received his education at the Bauer #4 Rural School. Following his schooling, he farmed with his dad. Otto served his country in the United States Army, being inducted in February 22, 1951. His dad became ill and Otto received a hardship honorable discharge on January 25, 1952, so that he could return to the farm. Otto married Ruth Dockter at the Zion Lutheran Church on October 2, 1960. They lived on the farmstead until 1992, when they moved into Eureka. Otto continued to farm until his retirement in 1996. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church and belonged to the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186 in Eureka for over 70 years. In retirement, Otto enjoyed doing yard work, tinkering outside and playing cards. Otto was very particular about everything he owned, especially his vehicles. Otto entered the Eureka Avera Care Center in June of 2019. After losing his wife Ruth on August 1, 2019, Otto moved to Prairie Pointe Assisted Living Center in Bismarck to be closer to his Godson, Jostin Schaeffer and lifelong friends, Dale and Paula Schaeffer so they could take care of some of his needs. While there, he enjoyed “old time music” provided by the Living Center weekly. Often you could hear the sounds of The Dakota Rangers or that of Alan Aman blaring in his room. He was also blessed to have Pastor Perry Schnabel as his minister.
Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Alice Nehlich of Eureka and his Godson and special friends, Jostin, Dale and Paula Schaeffer of Bismarck.
In addition to Ruth, Otto was preceded in death by his father, Jacob, on October 8, 1978; his mother, Anna, on March 22, 1972; one brother, Arthur; and one sister, Elsie.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, led by Pastor Ryan Gage.
