Patricia Rose (Redlegs) Dedman “Strong Hearted Woman” Chante Was’ake Win was
born August 5, 1964 to Henry Redlegs Sr. & Magadline Redlegs (Red Door). Patti grew
up in Little Oak Creek in Little Eagle,SD. She had 11 siblings, 6 brothers and 4 sisters,
after Henrietta passed mom was the youngest out of the girls. Her siblings she held
close to her heart, she would always be happy when they came to visit her. She went to
school at Little Eagle Day School and went on and attended high school at Mclaughlin
she graduated from Mclaughlin High School in 1981. She then attended Cook Christian
Training School in Tempe, Az from here she met the love of her life Dean Y. Dedman
Sr. met in December of 1982 from the moment they met they would write letters to each
other mom lived in South Dakota and Dad lived in Arizona. Over the years the letters
brought them closer together; they then got married on March 6, 1985 at Good
Shepherd Church by her father Henry Redlegs Sr. and Father Hobbs. From this union
they had five children and made their home in Chinle, Az.
She lived with Dean and her children in Arizona for the next 12 years. She gained many
friendships and had a lot of family in the southwest that she always held dear to her
heart. She moved back home to Standing Rock in 1997 to take care of her mom, until
her passing in 2001. She applied at Indian Health Service in Mclaughlin, SD in 1997.
She got a house for her family and made their home in the countryside of Little Eagle,
SD. She enjoyed the country life, she and dad liked their peace and quiet aside from
town or city life. Her son Hendricks came to the family in 2003 he was three months old,
she and Dean raised him as their own. She worked for the government for over 20yrs
and retired in September of 2017. After her mother had passed mom took care of her
family, started doing the work of the lord when her mother was still alive and got more
into it after her passing, following in her father’s footsteps Patti earned herself a Senior
Catechists title in 2008 before that she was a lay reader who always enjoyed the work
of the lord, she did that for over 20yrs. She enjoyed the gatherings at Good Shepherd
Church that she took care of after her father passed. The many gatherings in the
communities, Patti always cared for others in a time of need, over the years she had
attended many wakes and funerals within Standing Rock even traveled to other
reservations within the state when called upon. She was always there, she had a kind
heart and beautiful singing voice. They then got called “The Rockettes” by the late Fr.
Les Campbell they would sing beautiful Lakota hymns for comfort for families who were
mourning or a celebration. Developing many friendships while at IHS she enjoyed
retiring. She enjoyed her grandchildren. She had 9 of them: her grandsons- Darnell Jr,
(Dj), Dreson (Dredre), her chikpa’s (Lakota Term for twins) Kaiden & Kymani, and
Kingston (Food baby), her granddaughters- Kinyaa’aanii (waywah), Kaieesha (Kai),
Brooklynn (Brookie), Dineyah (Babygirl) there was nothing Patti wouldn’t do for any of
them. She took care of them, and was always around them. Enjoying birthdays,
holidays with them, her favorite holidays were birthdays, thanksgiving, christmas and
easter. She took them on numerous trips, Patti enjoyed traveling with her family. Her
and her husband always made trips back to the southwest to visit family and friends, the
southwest was their second home. She enjoyed cooking for her family and others, she
would always set up her stand “ Patti’s Country Kitchen” at the Pow wow in her home
community of Running Antelope. Patti also enjoyed sewing and making quilts, she
cherished her grandchildren and made sure each had a quilt when born. She looked
forward to hunting season each year as her nephew Damian would always come home
to the country, she enjoyed his company, she looked forward to his cooking and deer
jerky that he always dropped off for her. She shared her love with everyone she met in
her life, she was always strong willed in whatever she did in her life, that’s just how she
was, how she presented herself as she walked through life.
After her retirement from the Indian Health Service in September 2017. She was in a
major automobile accident which resulted in her almost losing her life. Caused by some
black ice she was hit by a semi truck, in the vehicle was also my niece, my nephew. All
three were taken to Mobridge Regional all had major life threatening injuries all were
flown out to Sioux Falls, SD to Avera McKennon in which she laid there in a coma for 8
days before she woke up, only to find herself in the ICU with a bruised brain, a major cut
from the back of her head to the front of her forehead, a broken pelvic, a shattered leg,
broken ribs, and a fractured wrist, the list continues. My niece had hit her head so hard
it knocked her eyesight off balance, doctors told us that she would have to relearn how
to walk and talk again. My nephew had a torn spleen and a broken leg and a face and
arm full of lacerations, which are now scars. My niece and nephew and mother
prevailed and survived this horrible accident. After a month in the hospital mom was
able to finally come home. It was an emotional bittersweet homecoming. Those are the
words I remembered I used to describe her homecoming as I picked her up from the
entrance. My dad and all of us really were an emotional wreck we now suffer from
PTSD because of the accident.
The following year 2018 the same month in November she was in another major
automobile accident again with my nephew. From this she was life flighted to Fargo
Medical Center, she went into surgery right away from this accident they were not sure
if she was going to lose her leg or not, all the hardware that was put in her right leg was
damaged and shattered. All of that was removed and they fixed what they could. Her
left leg was broken and they had to put pins in that as well, with my nephew he had
internal bleeding and was fighting for his life and he overcame his injuries. From this
accident she lost her right leg, with the hopes of walking again an amputation of her left
leg happened in November of 2019. Doctors could not save the leg. We love our dear
mother and we never took her for granted. She was still currently healing from her
accidents and her last surgery in October 2020.
Her body was never the same but through it all she continued to carry her faith. She
continues to be strong despite the obstacles she faced, she continued to live each day,
woke up with prayer and went to sleep with prayer right before her passing she was in
the hospital again this time in Sanford ICU Covid-19 Unit in Sioux Falls, SD. She was
fighting covid-19 she had been in the hospital since October 26, 2020. Our dear mother
fought as long as she could, she was a fighter, one strong lady that was her name given
to her “Strong Hearted Woman” Chante Was’ake Win. She lived her life to the truest
and lived a great one, she will forever be in our hearts, she touched the lives of many.
We are grateful to have shared her with many.
