Peggy was born on November 21, 1948, to Keith and Ruth Wilcox. She spent her early years on the family farm in Hurley, SD, until 1965 when her family moved to Pierre. Peggy graduated from T.F. Riggs High School in 1967 and went on to attend SDSU. There she earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies and later earned a master’s from BHSU in curriculum and instruction. While attending high school, Peggy met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Rose. The couple married on August 30, 1968, and were blessed with four children: Phillip (Phil), Aaron, Andrew (Andy), and Joshua (Josh). Peggy and Bob lived, worked, and raised their boys on the family ranch in rural Hayes. Peggy’s days were busy caring for her boys and enjoying all the daily ranch activities, including raising horses, which was a passion she and Bob shared.
She loved her country home and was actively involved in the Hayes community. Known for her humility, kindness, and strong work ethic, Peggy helped with ranch activities and could make everyone around her feel comfortable to come as they were and sit at her table. She was a member of the Happy Home Club, involved with annual fall bazaars, and prepared food for monthly fund-raising meals at Kirley Hall.
After earning her degrees, Peggy taught her first year in Arlington and also substituted at the Cheyenne School while her boys were young. As her sons grew older, she continued her teaching career in Stanley County and later returned to her alma mater, T.F. Riggs High School. She was an officer and an active participant in Delta Kappa Gamma, where she continued to promote her passion for learning. She herself was a lifelong learner and was committed to making an impact in her profession by mentoring younger teachers. She is a member of the Retired School Personnel and VFW auxiliary organizations.
Peggy was passionate about teaching and education. Her excitement about education was something that she loved to pass on to her students. She took great pride in the achievements of the oral interp students she supervised at Riggs High School. In her English classroom, she was known for her willingness to give students a second chance in the learning process to ensure their understanding of a concept. She showed compassion for her students and always took the steps needed to help them succeed in a subject that was not always held as a favorite.
Retirement for Peggy did not slow down her kind and energetic spirit. She enjoyed the travels, adventures, and opportunities that came with her and Bob’s shared love of horses. Her organizational skills proved invaluable as she meticulously documented the pedigrees and histories of each colt they raised on the ranch. Peggy cherished her time in the pasture, nurturing the horses, feeding them grain, and capturing their beauty through photographs. Her profound love and dedication to her horses, family, and ranch will always be remembered.
Peggy loved and adored her friends and family. She was often seen supporting Bob at various roping events, playing bridge with friends, and proudly attending the many different activities of her thirteen grandchildren, whom she loved and cared for deeply. She always made sure that her grandchildren knew how deeply her love for them ran.
Peggy will be fondly remembered for her kind and humble nature that accompanied her infectious smile. Whether she was playing bridge with friends, spending time with her beloved family, or creating passion and excitement in her students, her love and joy touched everyone around her, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations to come. She will always be remembered fondly and with love by all those who cherish her.
